Peeling trim and motorplan

Is peeling trim covered by motorplan. I have a section around my steering button that seems to be peeling a bit.

Below is a pic I've taken from another forum - mine is peeling in a slightly different location, but it's the same panel.

Alternately, if it's not covered by MP, anyone know where I can purchase PlastiDip in Guateng?

good question. i would also like to know as mine is also starting to do that

question is, with BMW, is warranty the same as motorplan? I have read a number of people having their steering wheels replaced under warranty but nothing has been said about MP??

On one trip to the dealer, they took care of my badly faded handles in the e90 without me even asking, couldn't believe it! So when I got my current car,I enquired about the steering wheel and they said that it's not covered by mp. Inconsistency but that's the stealers for you..

If I remember correctly I think Onyx sells plasti dip

I am also curious about this. The soft touch textured coating on the centre console where the seat belt buckles are have had some damage from the buckles rubbing up against the coating - the felt pads were badly worn so not offering as much protection. So when my car goes in I am going to ask about this, plus the rear vent face-plate keeps coming loose - I think some clips have broken somehow. Let's see - basically soft touch coatings are always a problem!

Yep Onyx is the man.
Mine is also peeling from the part where the window switches are mounted.
I've read the MP T&C's and it is only covered under warranty.

Trim is only covered within the 2 year warranty period. If out of warranty you can ask for a BMW rep to have a look and possibly do a goodwill claim but chances of success is slim as this is a common problem on E90 sports steering wheels, and iv tried and they declined to assist. BMW quoted me R3000 to replace that panel on the steering wheel. R3k for some low grade, poorly painted plastic, I think not. If it continues peeling u can peel all the paint off, only thing the colour under is slightly shinier.

Yes it is. Buddy here at work's 320d door panel trims and dash peeled. He took it in at Auto Atlantic and it was replaced. No problem.

Trim is only covered under warranty for the first 2 years. Had mine done beginning of December this year at Forsdicks at no charge. They did it out of goodwill (my car was just out of MP).

If you folks do not come right, I am keen to see what I can do here.

I know I can do the interior trim decently, but keen to try on a steering wheel.

First brave soul to bring it to me will be free, then I can calculate amount of hours involved, and make a price for in the future :)

Well, when I bought my E90 I had noticed that there were some areas on the front doors where the soft touch coatings had worn off. Amongst a few other things I asked if they could have this sorted out before I take delivery - the salesman said that they will send the car to have these parts re-coated. Came out perfect although I suspect it's not a soft touch coating - not sure though. But it looks 100% like the rest of the interior bits that have the soft touch coatings. So if all else fails I will see if I can find out who does their repairs and take my car to them.

But yes, this is a common problem with the E90 and is made worse by the fact that they have gone cheap with the plastics used. All that is different is the colour of the soft touch coatings, the base plastic colour is white/light grey or something. As far as I know with the E46 you would have a black coating on black plastic, tan coating on tan coloured plastic etc... Hence the problem. So while soft touch is "nice" to the touch so to speak, it's not practical, so I am all in favour of a more durable solution that closely mimics the original look of course.

The process that I took with the interior trim is as follow.

Flat completly, plastic primer, etch primer if needed.

Body color paint, but can easily do a matt black. and then two or more layers of clearcoat.

This is then taken onto a polishing machine.

The results are really good, if not excellent, but not everyone is keen on a gloss.

The above process is of course really labour intensive, which makes the process expensive, but the results are worth it.

However, this will be a matt only finish without a clearcoat. Therefore I am worried about the paint, does not help that I paint it perfectly, and it peels the first time you even think of looking at it, hence...

Somehow the people that did the repair to the affected parts before were able to simulate the texture of the soft touch coating - not sure how they did they!

I agree with the above.

When my car was in for service in November, I enquired about this as my trim om my steering wheel is also peeling. I got told the same thing, only covered if it's within 2 years, otherwise they know someone who can spray it for R700. Then I assume I'd still have to pay for the labour etc etc.

So for now, it can peel, until it looks very bad, then I will sort it out.

Yes must be covered. I requested the dealer to replace mine in 2011 and it was done without stories. The car is 2007 model so the 2-year warranty thing seems like a lame excuse.
