Overheating

Hi,

My car would always stay in the blue, but got stuck in world cup traffic on friday and she overheated, now she continues to get hot and the pipe on the radiator keeps blowing off.

any help please?

1st. stop driving it. Second, what model and engine?

If it was always in the blue, the thermostat was stuck open. A petrol car should go to the middle within about 4km and get stuck there solidly and never budge. Diesel just takes longer. If its now in the red, I guess your waterpump is gone, so replace both and hope you haven't done any permanent damage.

it's the 1995 320i with a m52 motor.

Previously it never went out of the blue. It is getting very frustrating.

Sounds like cracked cyl head, the pressure from the piston is pressurising the coolant system and blowing the radiator pipe off. Time for a major engine coolant overhaul too.

eish sounds like lots of moola:cursin:

it was running fine, always cold, but just the traffic on friday when i was stuck for 2 hours near rand show off ramp, it got hot and now seems to overheat on small trips.

Saturday when i drove went up to half, then dropped into the blue and stayed there, now on the way to work started getting hot again.

I also found a round plastic cyclinder type thing in the water bottle.
its about 3cm high and about 1.5cm wide. not sure where it comes from?

sorry, also the guys that checked the water on saturday could have overfilled the bottle.
it looked like it was way above the cold mark, it was like completely full, could this also play a role?

the platics thing looks like it could be

i checked the dipsitck and oil looks pure and there was no oil in the water, is it a mission to change the head gasket on these, my opel took me like an hour, but this is a moerse machine.

First thing is your thermostat has been buggered for a long time...if its only sitting in blue than as been said its stuck open...which in turn the car thinks its cold and will burn more fuel....You will need to replace that.
Secondly try doing the following procedure..follow each step exactly

How to bleed the cooling system.
1.Jack the front of the vehicle up onto stands as high as possible,
2.Turn the ignition on,engine off, heater on fan setting 1 and temperature fully hot,
3.Remove the rad cap/expansion cap, remove the bleed screw from the radiator and IF you have them the bleed screw(s) from the thermostat housing/top hose, return pipe or EGR thermostat.
4.Fill the radiator up and keep pouring till there are no more air bubbles coming out from the bleeds, using a funnel that fits tight in the radiator neck and filling it full of water will help push any troublesome air out, when good you can then install the bleeds and tighten down(don't snap them),ensure the rubber O-rings/seals are still on the screws/on the bleed holes.
5.Suck some water out so it's not full to the brim, replace the cap and then start the car. Run her up and check for heat from the vents when warm and check if over heating still persists. You may have to bleed troublesome cars twice(but rare).
6.If all is good then check the water level again in the morning when cool.

Third..check that your waterpump is ok you may need to replace this too and you will need to replace your radiator cap.

Fourth get a sniff test done. This will show if you have a blown head gasket or cracked head...If you have a cracked head then its easier to replace the engine than it is to get the head skimmed and replaced...a lot have tried and failed miserably. Its the fact that once the head is off it is f*cking difficult to put it back as you will need arp bolts because the original holes will undoubtedly be threaded. As a side note the M52 engines don't like overheating...not as trusty as the M50 block...

thanks for the info StK,

will replace the thermostat the weekend. (or wednesday public holiday :excited:)
Although now it goes to half for a while then after about 5-8 km goes over the 1/2 mark and into the red.

I will bleed the system tonight and advise of the results.

well i drove home and car overheated again, waited for it to cool down, drove then parked it.
this morning when i turned the key heard a loud noise. Now the motor just swings freely. but does not want to start.

Is it possible that the cam could have snapped? Where do i start looking?

any recommended machy in jhb that does not charge a arm and a leg?

You now looking at replacing the engine..........be cheaper than trying to mend the one you've got and if they do get the head off then its very hard to get it back together again....save your money and put in a new engine..the bang sound could have been a few things ie waterpump

ENGINE den sells the M52 for R7500, might be the answer. How do i know if mine is the vanos or non vanos?

Thanks once again StK

If you have to replace the engine, might be time for a 328i engine transplant. Ask streetracer about his brothers car..

Also Gizmo is in Glenvista, Give him a call and ask him. He might be able to help.

I agree, might as well spend a couple more k's and get the 328i engine, the difference in power is astounding.

I don't think its a viable option to change from a 4cyl to a 6cyl, rather fix the car, sell it and buy a 6cyl, it will work out much cheaper, faster and more reliable. Remember, the 328 has bigger brakes, defferent ecu, different wiring, different gearbox, different piping, different alternator etc.. I wouldn't consider it.
