Out of a 1M and into a M4

I've been deliberating posting this thread for a few months now. I sold my 1M, (First owner) to get into a new M4. I let the 1M go in Dec 2014 as part of a very sweet deal put on the table by BMW! I finally took delivery of the M4 in March this year.....

And this is my story.....

Firstly the 1M:
I was one of the fortunate few to be allocated one of the very limited 1M's destined for South Africa, as many of you will know these machines are very special in their own right. Spec's on these cars were very limited and truth be told I was never very happy with the added mods considering the list price. Hind-sight I could not have been happier with the price when letting her go 4 years later. I was never in it to make money as a future sale, and never thought I would let her go.

The 1M drive is something special. Anyone who has had the opportunity to drive one, (hard) will tell you that the car performs impeccably well. Every time I got into the car which was purely a weekend toy, I would count my lucky starts that I own this machine.

Handling - Spot on, It does everything you tell it to, but be careful if you think you know better. It is so sharp and clinical that it can bite you very quickly. Uneven surfaces was not a comfortable place often unsettling the car which has a firm/hard ride 100% of the time, the 1M is more at home on a track like surface.

Performance - fun factor 10/10, throttle response in M mode made the car seem lighter on its feet. Oodles of torque and throttle response was fantastic. 3rd gear, if you had enough space was crazy. The manual shift.... say no more.....

Roll on M4:
Deliberation on whether or not I should pull the trigger on the M4 was a hard one. BMW went back and forth with me trying to do a deal on the 1M which at the time had 13k kms on the clock. Finally I put what I thought was a ridiculous deal on the table with them to let the 1M go and sure as nuts they took it. All of a sudden the tire kicking was real, and before I knew it I was handing over the keys to the 1M in leiu of a deposit on a M4....

I only took delivery of the M4 in March this year, so I had a few months to get over my anxieties of losing the 1M. Taking delivery of the M4 was a special moment, what a beast!!

Handling - Unlike the 1M, the M4 can be Dr. Jekyll or Mr.Hyde depending on your driving mood at the time. The assortment of active performance settings you choose from are endless! This particular M4 has all the boxes ticked, other than the 100k option ceramic breaks. The chances of this car ending up on a track is fairly low. The car is not exactly small in size, but get it going with Sport Plus active modes engaged, and it feels like a go-cart on steroids. I'm not however a big fan of the Sport Plus active steering mode, its almost too precise and find myself having to manage the steering more delicately.

Performance - Not to be biased but the performance from the M4 in comparison to the 1M is undoubtedly better. The 1M is no slouch off the mark, but the torque of the M4 and how it puts the power down is amazing. Have not tested the launch control yet, still in the run-in period of 2000kms.

In Conclusion:
The fact that the 1M is a limited car, and we will never see another like it in time to come, I do have my regrets that I did not hang onto it. As mentioned earlier, it is a very special car. Having said that, I was more OCD about driving the machine, and given its rarity I struggled to enjoy it to its potential. It spent most of its time with me in the garage under a cover! (whats he point). I love gadgets, and this car was severely lacking in that department. It is a purists car, designed specifically for one purpose, hard and fast.

The M4 on the other hand is more well rounded to suit my needs and lifestyle. Yes, I will take a bath on in in time to come, hopefully not too bad given the deal I finally brokered with BMW. Yes, there will eventually be one on every Sandton corner and yes it will age faster than a 1M IMHO, but I have no regrets going with the M4.

That 1M may just may have looked more special than your m4! It can't be compared to the m4 as this is an entire different animal however I never would have sold a 1M...
