Ok, I did something really stupid

Hi guys, new member here.

I came upon a decently priced 2004 530d E60 last week and looking at the overall status of the car and for the price I decided that this was to be my first BMW. Now the most expensive car I have ever bought is a Toyota RunX 1800RX and the "fanciest" car I've ever owned was a Mazda MX6 so getting such a classy car for me feels quite special.

I've always been a fan of BMW's and I've always hoped I could own one one day so I took the car for a test drive and came back with a smile. The car has just over 123,000 km's on the clock and the owner at least was honest and said he drove the car quit hard at times.

So the stupid thing I did was to replace my trusty RunX with an older car that could potentially give me a lot of problems in the future and I didn't even get an expert to just take look at the car first.

I'm happy that I came upon the forums though and for future reference would like to know if you guys can recommend any of the (Western Cape) based sponsorships listed on the front page or perhaps even someone else for general service, maintenance and repairs.

Happy Driving,
Don

@moranor: lol, it's true, I didn't want to sound too pessimistic as I'm actually quit ecstatic at the moment... kid-with-new-toy syndrome I guess. :)

@eksniks: I've taken a look at their website, they definitely look on the ball, thx man.

It's my birthday tomorrow so I first need to check with the wife if she planned anything. I need any excuse I can find to drive to places though, lol. :D

Can't wait, if all goes well I'll be picking up the beemer this evening.

People have been shot for a lessor comment. :):):)

(Hope Coisman does not see this).

Nah just kidding. Hope you will have plenty trouble free mileage.
(No, seriously, Coisman likes to "Skiet die bliksem"). :):):)

To tell you the truth I did the same 6 years ago...
drove a 2003 180i GLX Corolla, and traded it in on a 2000 320d,
I have since traded up to a 2003 325i, which is still only now the same year model as what my Corolla was,
but i am soooooo glad I made the move, and even more upset I didn't do it sooner.
So you won't be sad you did it, trust me, and rememeber...

Nothing wrong with a RunX for what it is, I drove a rented one north to south through England and I remember it being a lot of fun through mountain passes.... Obviously a BMW is better but other cars can be good too.

Enjoy the BMW and being the awesome machine it is, obvously it could cost more money to maintain, but well worth it in the end.

There are those odd days where I find myself missing my old Corolla, but then quickly remember why I always wanted to get rid of it - it's a trustworthy appliance, that's all. We all want drivers cars so that's why we are here!

Anyway, congrats on the 530d! Treat it well and I am sure it will last - my advice since it is a diesel. Nurse it when it is cold and on hotter days too. Let the turbo get chance to settle before shutting the engine off - also helps allow the turbo time to cool down a bit. Maintain it well with good quality oil - feed it well too (50 ppm). I am as sceptical as most when it comes to modern diesels, but I still firmly believe that if properly looked after there is no reason for a diesel to give problems in the long term. :)

Thanks for all the great comments and general insight okes, if you don't see much more feedback tonight it's because I'm on the open road somewhere ;)

Since the request was made for some pics I'll make sure to get it up ASAP. My new baby is white which I guess is a little less exciting than some of the other available colours but dam I'm in love overall. Quality feel all over, interior seems like new and I'm one happy chappy. The wife is just shaking her head but she will never understand. :D

Wait till you go on weekend or if the wife goes shopping and she will quickly appreciate the ENORMOUS bootspace and the power, speed and comfort with which she can get the groceries home :)
