The more you use the drive the less chance you have of recovering anything. Formatting it was not a good option. I do data recovery and the likelihood of recovering your data now is not great. Not much free that is worth downloading.

formatting was the only option tried a few ways to get the info off before i did it :yuck: not using it just formatted and loaded something small on to see if it was working...

will not use it till i have tried to recover the info 1st :)

Mike, I have been doing data recovery for 22 years. I didnt say it was impossible, but it is unlikely, especially if you don't have the right tools. But am not going to argue, if you think its untrue, so be it.

Have you loaded anything on the drive since formatting it?

done and dusted 2 drives from formats with Ontrack.
And One drive crashed so bad could hardly get it up and running, took nearly 2 weeks to recover, and managed 80%
I think over the last 5/6 years Ive managed more than 10 recoveries. :=):

Remember one thing, you try a recovery and you don't do it right, you ruin your chances of ever getting the data back. I have the Ontrack software along with almost every other bit of recovery software available. It will recovery in some scenarios, but this sounds like a NTFS partition that went bad before the format. Good luck with Ontrack, hope it works.

@ Moranor, how important is this data?

the data is not that important, but i would like to get it back if i can :) only loaded a small file onto the hard drive to see if it will work because warranty is running out and i need to decide if i will return it...

I've also used Ontrack a few times in the passed. I've even used it on a crashed drive where the only option to get it working (After I recovered the files) was to format.

My old flash drive went completely corrupt. Windows wanted to format the drive every time I clicked on it in My Computer. Ontrack made short work of it.

You should always try and recover the data before you format and I'm sure this is obvious, but always recover to a completely different drive.

moranor: You have PM.

I had that a few times, although never with one of my own drives. Usually a friend's HDD. For the most part the drives themselves are fine, it's just the file system that gave in. We would recover what we can and then just format after which the drive is 100% again.

I should just point out that most of these crashes were on Maxtor and Samsung drives. My old 160Gb Western Digital is now almost 6 years old and has never crashed.
