New X5 Owner

I have just received 2003 X5 diesel
Would like to know what engine and gearbox/ drive train I have.

It really goes well and is there any concerns I have to look out for
as ( gearbox problems). Has full service history

Previous vehicle was Land Cruiser 4.2 Diesel VX Auto and sold it on 4065k with very little or no problems after 11 years

Many Thanks

Yup, you will be overhauling the gearbox (I assume it is also auto?), keep R22k in the bank and only do it at either Sparklight gearboxes or ZF (yes, I know your car has a GM gearbox - that is why it is going to break, well that and the fact that it was made in France). Cheap gearbox rebuilds ALWAYS end in tears, especially w.r.t. this particular gearbox.

The rest of the car should serve you many years, provided you remove the swirl flaps, and replace the crankcase breather valve (google). The crankcase breather needs to be either replaced with the newer vortex type, or replaced every third service if you stick to the "loo roll" type.

Welcome to the forum

I think it is still worth it, this is a great car. Just be prepared. I have the same gearbox in a 530d and I am on 290kkm, but I think my box is ready to give up. On the X5, I have heard dead boxed from just over 100kkm to 200kkm, mostly luck of the draw.

Adding to what P1000 said.

Your only other issue on it is the transfer case which also likes to go poof.

But they are awesome cars, and insane value for money.

Keep ready for that gearbox rebuild

I would advise you to invest in an aftermarket warranty programme.

I personally am a fan of SA Warranties. If the vehicle has been serviced on time then you should have no issues with claims.

with regard to the vehicle. The X5s are great vehicles. It was poor build quality of the auto gearboxes that were fitted to the 3.0Diesel model in that era that caused kak. With SA Warranties, you should be covered for at least half of the rebuild cost, setting you back R11k as opposed to R22k.

The warranty covers various items, and at roughly R8k for two years, unlimited mileage, I think its well worth it.

The gearbox may never give up on you, depending on the previous owners driving style and on yours.

Congrats on a great vehicle.

That one should have the newer slightly stronger 6 speed ZF box (correct, P1000?)

Yup, although that one has a plastic sump.
(if by slightly you mean 600Nm vs 390Nm rating)

Not so bad from an autobox parts distributor. I lost the details, though.

3 Injectors overfueling... Transfercase..... and turbo .... poof!!!

all overnight literally !!!

The bill from agents R 56000 . 00 excl transfer case...

went to sa warranties gave them the bill, they only paid...

wait for it ........... R4500.00 :biglol:

needless to say i got rid of it ... lost a shit load of money but hey...

NOW I DRIVE A E90 330I

Welcome bud!

You said. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle and that it gos well.

My advice STOP worrying of what can or will go wrong! you are worrying your life away and forgot why you bought it.

Drive the X5 like you would normally do with any other vehicle. And most of ALL Enjoy your BMW experience.
