sup BMWfanatics

so it looks like theres gonna be a mini parked next to my car in my garage soon... the missus is hell bent on it :) so i figured why not ask you lot about any possible issues or things to look out on them seeing as we're buying second hand.

We're currently contemplating a white Cooper with 72xxx Kms, CVT and convertible.

- At what mileage is the cambelt changed on these cars?
- Approx cost of that service (dealer & private please)?
- Any known issues with the CVT boxes?
- Any possible issues with the convertible roof mechanism?
- Anything else i should look out for?

Thanks peeps, any info is appreciated and we will probably end up joining you lot on a breakfast run sometime soon.

What is your budget? Personally I would stay far away from an R53 Cooper and considering the R56 Cooper has the BMW Steptronic box and can be had for similar money that would be my recommendation.

Servicing costs the same as any other 1.6 Litre Hatch, however big ticket items are more expensive, the R56 is (I stand to be corrected) Chain Driven and only the Cooper S has tensioner issues etc.

The roof is pretty awesome, on the R53 its solid, on the R56 make sure the plastic covers are not broken, they cost a pretty penny and they do break.

Of course I know the convertible is the R57, just referring to R53 which is old shape or pre 2007 and R56/R57 which is new shape and is after 2007.

The after 2007 is a complete redesign, from Chrysler Motors/boxes to BMW Boxes and Peugeot/Citroen/MINI motors.

These are great cars, enjoy yours.

thanks ppl for the welcome.

@minimike19.. thanks for the info bud.

One more question, i've been advised that the fuel pumps on these cars can be troublesome and pricey to replace, any comments on that?

what about simply replacing the fule pump with an aftermarket unit should it actually pop?

To be honest I have not heard of that complaint....

But like with all cars, find yourself a reliable techie and let the savings begin.
