HI from Pretoria,

I recently sold my 2010 Audi S4 as i got tired of filling up the fuel tank on a weekly basis and picked up a F30 320d Msport yesterday. Off the bat i am missing the power that was available all the time but the ol oil burner will make up for that in other areas, Im sure.

Looking forward to MANY miles with this sexy little car.

Congratulations man.

I also bolted from the Audi stable.
First thing you will notice is the drop in interior quality from Audi to BMW (notice how the ashtray lid does not soft close in the F30 compared to your B8?).

However, the 320d excels in everything else. Driving a diesel requires a different technique to get the most performance out of the motor compared to a petrol. Keep the revs in the right band and you can sail on that wave of torque all day long on the highway.

I took my 320d out for an Audi breakfast run in January and I was impressed with the in-gear tractability of the car up winding hills. Just about managed to keep up with some older S cars (B8 pre-facelift shape S5 - N/A V8).

Here's to many happy and safe (and frugal) miles ahead!

Welcome bud. I wanted to buy a B8 S4 at one stage but I heard some horror stories about the DSG gearbox.

Hahaha, yes i noticed the ashtray lid thing. i definitely feel a difference in quality but like you said the 320d excels in other areas. I mentioned that i immediately felt the lack in power but it doent help that i was plonking around in eco mode right from the dealer. Rush hour dictated that decision. Some leg stretching will be called for over the weekend though.

Luckily i never had problems with the gearbox. I bought the car second hand and only realized the day before i sold it that the mechatronic was replaced when it was only 2 years old. I only had to replace the waterpump, thermostat, fuel pump and when the supercharger belt broke replaced that along with all the pulleys and tensioners.

@SubLoaded Ill post some more pics when i can get a hold of my wife's phone. My old note 3 just isn't good enough anymore.

Congrats on the new wheels, always liked the S4.. The B6 S4 is a still a car that catches my eye, along with the B7 RS4. When you have a chance, some pics of the S4 please.

Coming from the S4, the 330d would've possibly been a better bet, given the adjustment in power you are making. the 320d is a very capable car however and some small mods would help ease that adjustment.

I drove an LCI 320d few weeks back, and man oh man is that 8sp autobox magic with the 2.0d engine. I would go out on a limb and say its the perfect daily car.

I am sitting here and trying to figure out why i never even looked at the 330d. I suppose its because my wife will be driving it most of the time as i do my daily commute on a old zx10 and she definitely doesn't need more power. Too late now.

Hindsight is always 20/20... Always an option sometime in the future if/when the novelty of the 2.0d wears off, they are solid cars.

Thanks for the pics... Love the understated nature of the S4, looks mooi!

The part you love is the reason I did not like this model S4 (Don't intend on starting a keyboard war with the Ex-owner).

I feel the car is a bit too understated for an S-line model Audi. Especially when comparing it to its rivals like BMW and Merc, their styling was not to busy but it was enough to sport them from a distance, not with the Audi.

To the owner, You did downgrade in terms of power but the 320D will surprise you. Congrads, It is the best daily

Had some time over the weekend to put in some miles on the BM and i have to say that overall i am pleasantly surprised. Yes the 320d lacks the get up and go of the S4 but it hasnt bothered me one bit. It feels lighter, cosier and i dont know if it is because its a "new" car but i just feel overall happier. Since i picked her up on Wednesday I have done a little over 500km and even though i keep on checking the fuel gauge i only stopped at the garage once to check tyre pressures. I almost felt guilty when i stopped and i didnt have to ask the attendant to fill up. :smilebounce:

This past weekend I encountered a Mustang 2.3T (no 5.0 badge) on the N17 after the Carnival toll. Quiet stretch of straight, pristine road. The Mustang was fully loaded with passengers. I managed to pull away from him from around 80kmh onwards but I had to take an offramp soon before we could enter jail time speeds (where clearly the petrol turbo would pull away). Not the least bit scientific by any means, but shows you what a torquey diesel can do against a bloated (and loaded to capacity) pseudo muscle car...
