Hi

I am looking at purchasing a 2013 320d with 100000km on the clock, full franchise service history and it is in immaculate condition. I am moving over from a 2016 Passat 1.4 luxury dsg.
Is there any thing that i need to be aware of the 320d or any major issues to look out for?
and will is be a major change switching from my car to this one?

if its an auto get ZF to test the gearbox oil, they will service if need be.
Vibration damper pulley at 150,000km.
other than that no major issues and an excellent car.
change engine oil every 10,000km and youl have many many happy miles.

common problem on the F30s in general is the steering rack. theres a noise that emanates from the drivers side, as per BMW its not defective and a characteristic, there is an official repair kit for it now at R471 from dealers.

Hi momo1 thanks for the quick reply.
It is an auto i was thinking to replace the gearbox oil year end, and do an oil change when i buy it just to be safe.

Any idea on an more or less cost of vibration damper pulley?

I'm happy to hear there is a fix for it. I was researching and taht was one of the things that they said that some people even replaced there steering rack and the sound was still there.

I saw on other posts that every one recomends changing engine oil every 10,000km and not 15000km. Why is this seeing that BMW says 15000km?

Why are you moving from a 3yr old car to a 6yr old car?

The 320d is a great all rounder and it will be very enjoyable drive. At 100000km it should still be in good nick. As mentioned above no many major issues with th320d variant but you should ask Coisman to conduct a vehicle background check as well.

I also recommend 10000km oil service interval as the car is beyond motorplan. My experience is the BMW service interval is too long and you're likely to have sludge build up. My e90 had sludge at around 200000km even though I kept to BMW service intervals.

Honestly the reason for going to an older car is to save a bit on my monthly repayments but still have a reliable car that is not too far off from the Passat. Although the inside is quite smaller , the engine makes up for that.

This is good to hear. I got a guy in bmw to check the car out, serviced on time at dealer and not issues.

Ok that makes sense, to prevent sludge.

gearbox oil should only be changed if necessary , hence let the guys from ZF test it first.
at 100,000km it isn't vital that you do the damper pulley but costing from GW is around R3500

That makes sens and seeing that the oil is expensive, don't change if not needed.

Thanks for the information. I will do the dampers later then.

Hi,

If you are nearing the end of your Passat's maintenance plan (like BMW, the Passat has a full maintenance plan) on mileage (on years, should be 2021), then I would say go for the 2013 320d.

If you still have some decent mileage left on your Plan and will only hit the mileage and time limit in 2021, then you would need to weigh up these 2 factors for the next 2 years:

X = the higher cost of the 2016 Passat's installment over the 2013 320d, for the next 2 years
Y = the cost of maintenance of an out-of-plan 2013 320d for the next 2 years

It may be best to just extend the finance period slightly on your Passat and keep it a bit longer. You will have the benefit of the exisiting Plan and a reduced monthly burden to pay.

I thanks for the advise. I thought of that, i am on 75000km on my passat so there is basically one service left before i reach 100000km. if i save the money that i will be saving by buy the 320d just till year end will cover the next service and replacement of the filters etc.
The other advantage is the fuel saving on the 320d. I get about between 8.0/100 and 8.9l/100km on the passat currently.
My fear is like the turbo failing or major stuff, i'm going to take a warranty plan so that at least that's a little less to worry about.

With regards to the steering rack, it is easier and cheaper to just tighten the bolt on top of the rack, the knock goes away. I tightened mine few weeks back and still no issues. Easy access on the 320d, you can tighten from the front of the car, just remove the intake air box and you will have access to the nut. Tighten 1/8 of a turn and you should be fine

My mixed bag views:
1. I would not trade the passat for the beemer but i understand your financial reason. Maybe try renegotiate your monthly repayment terms with the bank?

2. The 320d is the pick of the bunch in the bmw offering - you will love the autobox. Frugal, nippy and very reliable if the previous owner serviced the car regularly.

3. Are you able to take out a warrantee plan for at least a year? So you dont get surprised by repairs you were not told by the seller.

4. The turbo on diesel cars do pack up but it is so seldom and unless the car has been abused you would be able to hear a distinct turbo whine during normal driving for signs of wear.

5. Yes the fuel consumption is a major plus and if its not, you can always tune it :tiptoe:

I agree the passat is a better pick but I tried to renegotiate and I save more if I get the Beemer.

I am gonna take out a 2 year warranty

I contacted BMW and every thing seems good service on time and regular. No major parts needed to be changed. So a good car all in all.

Yeah this is the major reason for the change as the passat is not as light as you would think

Is there a way to see if the turbo is going to give in soon?
Or any major parts?
