New M5

Saw 2 new M5's in the last few days (last Friday at JSN and yesterday at Fourways Crossing). I spent a few minutes looking at the exterior and I must say that something does not quite look right on this car. In pics its awesome and I think the normal 5 series looks superb, but somehow the M5s proportions seem wrong. I aware that some previous M cars have a few more "bulges" added to the bodywork that make it seem more muscular, but with the new M5, it almost looks .... dare I say, bloated and cheesy :thumbdo:

Can't put my finger on exactly what it is but overall I'm dissappointed by the appearance as previous M5s always had that x-factor in terms of looks and the new one just looks spoilt :thumbdo:

I was admiring one in Franschoek this morning. It's certainly aggressive, and it looks plush enough in a way that the old one wasn't. But then I saw a new Jag XFR 20m away, and it summed up the problem. The M5 is painted on a very big canvas, which means that it isn't quite as endearing to behold. And it doesn't sound half as good.

I'm a staunch M-fan but I must agree with^^^^. It looks somewhat more clumsy than it does slick and menacing.

Taking it for a test drive simply added to my disappointment. Don't get me wrong -- it's very fast, but I know this not because my butt dyno told me so but because I was surprised to see when glancing down at the Speedo that I was doing 180kph. It felt like I was doing about 130kph -- and therein lies the gremlin. It's so big (and admittedly exceedingly comfortable) and it delivers all that power on tap in such a sterile and linear fashion that it is, dare I say, disappointingly unexciting.

I then took the CLS63tt for a spin. Admittedly, it had the performance pack fitted so in terms of power output, very similar to the M5. All I can say is WOW!!! Although it's not twice as quick as the M5 it sure as hell feels that it is - and isn't butt dyno sensation a huge part of what these luxury performance cars or all about?

So for me, the new M5 gets a resounding :thumbdo:

Have to agree with some of the comments here. It's just too subtle for an M Powered car. The stance isn't great at all.

The wheel IMO doesn't do the look any favours either. The E60 M5 wheel would probably look better on this car, so to speak. This one I am afraid is going to need an after market adjustment to make it look more like an M should be. Both wheel and suspension wise.

I agree ^^^^
This new M5 is so boring, the one I drove in had lane assist to remind you when you are falling asleep and drifting across your lane.

It is still massively fast however.....

I like the New M5 Alot, But you can't really tell the difference between the normal 5 and the M, You have to actually look to see that it's a M

This is where they automatically give the competitors the edge. Silly little decisions that mean a lot.

I seen a C63 AMG Coupe this weekend in the flesh and PHARKEN hell that car is hot. I would have to think hard if I chose a M3 E92 with this Merc in the running.

True, I'm not really a Merc fan but that New C63 AMG Coupe is Just Overboard :praise:

i think it looks proper like how a //M5 should look.. I think the E60 was the odd one out, and didnt like the looks because of that.. its supposed to be understated rather than the extrovert in the family.. if you look back at history all //M5's save the e60 were like this.. glad to see //M returning to their ways, doing what they doing, truely listening to customers and rectifying issues raised in last model. I think it looks fantastic, havent driven one, but nearly all reviews choose it ahead of its competitors.\

// M Power.

I think only the 1M is giving true BMW driving pleasure, the other Ms have just grow to be become totally different to the original formula.

That said its interesting to note that imho the new M6 has been styled to be the real leader whereas with the previous M5/M6 everyone would refer to the M5 as the more outrageous of the 2.

I have to agree with most of the comments above, wrt to the M5s rather sedate appearance, for a car that costs R1Mill+, most people dont want a performance car that is so fast on the one extreme, but on the other extreme looks like any other sport version of the same base car.

I think the final nail on the M5 for me was that the in-car sound system is used to enhance the in car sound of the engine under throttle input, which to me is ridiculous. This is due to the engine being very quiet compared to the previous V10.

And the M5 definitely needs a better rim, with all that sheetmetal a slim spoke design looks lost and small on such a big car. :thumbdo:
