Believe it or not.

Fast forward to 2015 and the new star of BMW lineup is the G11/G12 7 Series. Set to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the new 7 Series uses advanced technologies learned from BMW’s newfound experience. To start, the construction will have extensive uses of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic), as well as other high-end materials such as aluminum and magnesium. What BMW calls Carbon Core Passenger Cell technology is a passenger cell that utilizes CFRP along with aluminum and high-tensile steels in the main passenger cell as well as B Pillars and roof. There are also aluminum doors and trunk lid as well as lightweight bonding and sound deadening. All of this weight savings leads to a 190 lb weight loss over previous models.

The weight savings are so impressive that they put the high-end luxury sedan at the same weight levels as the new 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 S. According to the official info, the C63 S Coupe, without 75 kg for driver and luggage (DIN standard), weighs 1725 kg, exactly 228 kilos more than the M4 with manual transmission. The 740i weighs in at 1725 kg while the 750i tips the scale at 1820 kg.

Without a doubt those numbers properly reflect BMW’s strategy for the future where we expect new models to be lighter and more nimble than ever before.

BMW Power.

This is a strange comparison.

Did you know that a Jaguar XJ is lighter than an e92 M3? The relevance can be argued:fencelook:

It highlights the extent of focus BMW is placing on weight reduction, the knock on effect is huge!

Apples for apples though, M4 is 230kg lighter than C63 Coupe S..

Exactly, well said. Amazing that such a large luxury sedan with a sh*tload of gadgets etc weighs the same as a pure performance car like the C63 AMG S.

If the c63 S weighed the same as an M4 imagine how much faster it would be?

Definitely. Hence I've always said that people and journalists compare cares that cater for 2 different markets.

Took BMW a while didn't it. Audi has been doing this for years with it's A8 using aluminium bodies. Probably take another generation or two for BMW to get that right then??

The new A8 weighs more than 2 tonnes. so even if they are made of aluminium they are still allot heavier.

But lucky for them they have been doing it for ages so hope fully some day they will do it right.

No they only have 1 answer the RS7, and how long did it take Audi to make a proper car like the RS7 ?

The Jags and Ranges/Landies use a new technology where the joints are 'glued' together - saves substantial weight.

Audi is all wheel drive which adds quite a bit and the lightest A8 is 1.9 tonnes. So all in all, the lightest 7 at 1800kg is much of a muchness at the end of the day.

Hmmm...

the RS cars on a whole are a hit and miss affair, the Rs7, even though probably he best of the RS bunch is still way off the best M cars currently and often the M6 GC is chosen over the RS7.

Regarding weight, BMW has made a concerted effort with carbon core technology - the first time it is being used in mass production. Their new model is bigger, has more tech and yet is lighter with the 740i weighing in at 1725kg - the A8 is 2000kg. That is HUGE, and the awd will not account for that.

BMW as always is leading the innovation from hybrid tech (i8) to its mass produced vehicles of which almost all will be lighter when new models are introduced.

Audi may be using aluminium body panels but so was the 325is in the 80s.. the big news is BMW is bringing their weight down, while not sacrificing any other area of the car from a weight hat is already lower than rivals in most cases.

BMW Power.

Don't know where you are getting those weights from, but I am quoting actual unladen EU weights, so 100kg between them. From memory, the BMW X drive adds a further 50kgs so the total difference between them is 50kgs at most, hardly huge.

I'm not knocking BMW, I think it's great that they are pushing the boat out and using new, to mass production, materials in innovative ways. My whole point was that while other cars were getting heavier, Audi had already started looking at this way before the others.

Audi is not just ali body panels, but the whole chassis. It was quite revolutionary when first launched years ago.
