Needing an expert

Hey guys,

I mentioned elsewhere that a while ago some a$$holes tried to steal my car. (1991, 535i A) It was found abandoned nearby.

I got it towed back to my place, recharged the battery which they had run flat and tried to move the car. Putting it into D was accompanied by a loud grating noise that seems to emanate from the rear and a total lack of movement.

So it seems logical that they somehow wrecked the diff, I have contacted Gizmo about a replacement LSD and I have managed to scrape the cash together for one (it's been a tough year).

But before I pull the trigger I would like the car checked out, it's still the original auto box, and I know these are fragile, so I wouldn't want to replace the diff only to find that the gearbox is the problem.

In the car the grating noise seems to come up through the gearbox, but from the outside it definitely seems to be coming from the rear.

It has been suggested that I drain the diff oil to check for metal particles, I will do this soon. I tried to put the car on stands this morning, but my jack was too short. :cursin: A second one will probably be handy, so I will get a big scissor jack in the course of the week and check the diff oil once the car is stable and I can fit under it.

Anyway, tl;dr version.

If my attempted diagnosis is unsuccessful, does anyone know a mechanic in the Westdene/Auckland park/Melville areas who will come out to take a look and not charge my left nut.

Times are tough, they will need to take testicles instead of money if the prices are too high.
