At that kind of price it should be pretty awesome, looks pretty good though, but only a personal inspection would provide enough info. Good looking cars the old 6ers.

It looks pretty decent, paint looks to have a pearl finish maybe thats what they mean by unique spraywork. Hope it checks out when you there it does appear to be sweet though.

Waiting for Uber to check this....

Hi! Was looking for a similar one up here in JHB. One thing that was off-putting was the price for some spares.....

Front door rubbers over R3000 for one! So its close to R7000 to fix door rubbers......and they are import only.....thats when I stopped looking. If you have friends family visiting from verseas, thats an option.......

Just my 2 cents worth, they are mindblowing cars to drive.......

Adi, I hear you. But they are just gorgeous. I was looking for a fixer upper as a project and after speaking to people that had done what I wanted to do you are better off just buying an excellent example (a friend did a restore on a Porsche 912 and when it was finished he could have bought a new 911 turbo for the money).

I have some reservations about this car though. Its for sale by a panelbeater... but mate is having a look today so we will see... similar car for sale in Paarl for R135000 vs. R55000 for this one... :dunno:

So my mate went too look at the car and reports that the colour is beautiful... I cannot use the exact terms he used but what he wanted to do would have matched the pearl finish. Inside its blue... I was hoping for black. It is also minor tatty. Is that leather, difficult to see from the pictures. The engine runs well although no test drive yet. I have noticed that engine bits have been painted blue and the aluminiun intake manifold and the thermostat housings have been painted silver. But more worrying is the idle bypass valve is missing. why would that be?

I am leaning away from this car now. Am I being to picky?

I was thinking of tearing it down anyway and rebuilding with a new paint job. I prefer dark colours...

Well

That radiator fan is original, the BMW fans havn't been orange for decades. Plug leads also original, the caps are not blue anymore.

The radiator expansion tank looks brand new, so maybe it overheated recently?

Well spotted!!! They yellow/ brown with age... :thinker:

You'll be amazed what river sand does when you clean the expansion tank with it. I have done it a few times and it looks like a new one afterwards.

Someone picky enough to have cleaned the expansion tank will not be someone leaving the seats in that condition i think.

Fair enough.

Well finally seen this car in the flesh and it is actually in better condition than the pictures I had suggested. Everything except the aircon works. There are small spots of rust but nothing more than surface. Leather is as hard as nails and the small rips can be stitched. Engine is fine and started immediately from cold. idles abit ruff but nothing serious brakes good and pulls strong. Slight vibration when there is power applied so I suspect a propshaft issue.

The gear lever feels very floppy... but good in all gears, no noise. Not the dogleg box:)

So opinions please, tomorrow I am going for a final check over and then its a deal hopefully...

paying R50,000 down from R55,000 lucked out in that before I got to see it personally it has gone to a dealer... but they will make sure that some niggles are sorted out and there is some sort of a back-up.

The thing is I have decided that I wanted a post 82 manual. This is exactly what I want and all the cheaper ones are in a terrible state. One has been bored out to a 3.9l for drifting and is missing interior bits. The other is an auto and I was warned by the owner it was not in a pretty state. These are all around R30000. So R50000 for a decent one is acceptable. If I was a week earlier I could have got it for 45000...

In on the ass-end of this post, but here's my 2c worth. The e24 was, and still is, a fantastic car, and makes a great classic BMW. However, beware, they are very expensive to restore. I have almost gone down this road twice, and now realize I will probably never do it. From a mechanical point of view, it's not a problem, almost all parts are still available, and not too pricey as they overlapped with the other models of the time. Yes, the post '82 version is the better bet, but don't ignore an immaculate earlier one. Body and trim are the killers. These cars are rust traps, the front wings rust inside ( not visible when viewing car ) and are shockingly expensive to replace. There are hidden rust traps everywhere. So, imho, only ever buy one of these if you have plenty money to do a decent restoration job and, of utmost importance, the body must be in very, very good condition to start with. Good luck, you're gonna need it:)

Well jumped the gun and did the deal... they are sending it for roadworthy on monday:excited::clap:

Sith I hear you. The bodywork: I did a very thorough examination and there seems to be no evidence of rust besides some surface rust around the sunroof drainpipe. The current owner is a panel beater and owns Rustguard:pimp: It was his personal car and he put the pearlesent paint over the existing paint. They seem like very reputable people, him and his dad. I doubt they would paint over rust, especially a special paintjob like that.

The main thing is that all the trim is in place all the seals are in good condition. The bumpers will have to be rechromed at some point.

Seeing as I started off looking at complete fixer upper this will be a nice project and I am not adverse to spending money and I can do most jobs myself so its just part availability. Something I will be looking for is the rear spoiler. And someone that can do the side stripes.
