Hey ive got a E36 M3 3.2 1998 euro spec.. we had a gymkahna a while ago and after a good couple of rounds my car got this LOUD ''GRRRRRR'' sound in the gearbox area, like i have seized the thrust bearing!!! so i drove my car back home '' Sounded sh*t but couldnt feel anything strange!!! the sound is there if the clutch is engaged or disengaged

Got my self a new clutch kit, Brand new flywheel , etc..
assembled the whole lot yesterday... and boom the sound is still there!!!:cursin:

If any of you have done the job you would know why i dont just want to open it up again!!!

my guess is it is the starter or something!!!! but it starts no problem and in my opinion if the starter kicked out and ran on the ring gear!! it would make a charge and melt the wires which is not happening!!! hope its not something in the engine!! but it revs up clean and the power is there!!! have any of you had this problem before????????

So you are saying that its doing this while the car is not moving , removing the diff out of the equasion.

If it was something in the motor, it would have broken by now or you would be down on power, could be one of the acc,, powersteering/alternator.

Powersteering motors can make a horrid whine as well if not lubricated properly.

Good looking site. Could not recognise the car on the dyno as an e46 M3...until after the video clip...good figures though

You'd best start praying it isn't the famous oil pump nut. I wouldn't start the car until you've made absolutely sure. Take off the pan and have a look down there.

Thanks twinz the site is still quite new and im still learning allot about websites but i enjoy doing it and it didnt come out to bad! the bmw is a e46 323i on 0.7 bar boost.. still some vanos trouble but if its sorted we will boost it 1 bar on pump fuel and 1.5 on avgas!!! keep your eyes on the site and post your cars info and vids!! its all for the fun.. dont want to compete with local websites or magazines!!!

thanks major.. ive got blisters on my knees of all the praying..!!! ill take the starter out tomorrow and hope its the bendix or something if not ill start checking the oil pump!!! but thanks for the heads up ill start it again if the problem fixed!!!

Awesome man, thats good news

Did you not see any damage on the old ring gear when you changed the flywheel ?

No i used the same ring gear on the new flywheel and there was no suspicious markings or damage to it!! The starter must have just touch the ringear!!!

i drove with the car just now and its back to its normal self!! just much more throttle responsive with the new flywheel!!! if any of you ever want or have to change the flywheel! AACC in pretoria machined mine out of billet for R3000 the weight i wanted it!!! its a solid flywheel not duel mass but it comes in very smooth not jurky at all!! it shudders a bit but thats the 4puck button!!
