N55 spark plugs on an N54

Hi Guys

So my buddy at BMW arranged a set of OEM plugs for my N54. But he got me the N55 plugs as they apparently run better on the N54 motors.

I asked him if he is sure about this and he said he is using them on his N54 (he is a BMW tech).

Has anyone used the N55 plugs on their N54?

If its a bad idea, i will have a set of OEM plugs up for sale this week.

The plugs on N54 are and N55 are different - there's 3 prongs on the N54 and one prong on the N55.

Because the N54 has knock sensors you can use the N55 plugs on the N54. But you can't use N54 plugs on an N55 because these don't have knock sensors, so the motor relies on the geometry of the plug to do ionization detection after the burn. Using the wrong plugs on the N55 causes occasional stutters and misfires.

If I was you, I'd stick to the N54 plugs on an N54 motor hey.

If the single prong plugs are gapped properly, it actually better for the N54 at higher than stock boost levels.
The one's plenty of us here on the forum run, are the NGK's, which is also a step colder spark plug.

But Gert, thank you for informing us on the N55 plugs. Thats something i never knew.

So i've installed the N55 plugs onto my N54 and they work great.

No stuttering at all.

I used the N55 plugs from BMW which are pre-gapped plugs.

So i've been using the N55 plugs for some time now and they run extremely well compared to the normal 3 prong N54 plug
