HUBBA HUBBA......You sir, are doing RESTORATION....RIGHT!!!!!

Thanks Jaydrft, I learnt a lot with the 530MLE restoration and I think it came out pretty good for my first try. I am hoping to do this one even better or at worse the same as the MLE.

Time and Money are my enemies here, and also the delay the panel beaters and other suppliers do. I like to start and get finished quickly, too long and you lose interest and you slack down on the finish. I only got the nickel parts back on monday, cant wait to get home every night now so i can carry on putting parts together. You need to see things progress otheriwse you get bored and the project flounders.

The MLE took 9 months, start to finish, this one is 9 months going and not even a body done yet!!

so some further updates..

Colour is on the body, inside and out. Imperfections to be fixed and then 2 more coats, polish and buff. I will drop off the almost rebuilt suspension to put her on the ground. Rims are being sprayed silver and clear coated and then tyres go back on after the paint is hardened.

I have rebuilt some more items including the steering box. Strip down, cleaned, new gaskets, seals and re-assemble with new bolts.

Side shafts are also almost complete. Remove old U- joints, yes old 1600 used U joint on one side and a simple style cv on other end. The CV is two ball end which slide in a chamber, basically allowing the side-shaft to change length due to wheels up and down movement. So new U-joints, pain a, cv boot, grease and new clamps and o-rings.

steering box before

about 5 hours later!

cant post more pics of the other stuff, my Samsung s2 is giving me shit, my new phone arrives Monday then should be able to post better pics.

SO the inevitable with every panel beater has happened..... After my last visit on the 9th, the painter handed me a wax pencil and asked me to circle all imperfections that I could find, so he could do a flat and spray again. I duly did and the car looked like a polka dot, I did warn him from the start I wanted a perfect paint job as its a concours car. This before discussions on price.

A few weeks back a passed with the freshly sandblasted and primed steelies and asked if does rims. He wouldnt hear about me taking them anywhere else. He was adamant he would do them perfect.

I have gone away on short holiday and returned, yesterday afternoon made a turn past the workshop. To say the rims look dreadful is an understatement. i could have done better with 100 grit sand paper and spray cans. My car hasn't been touched yet again for 2 weeks!!

So i strip about the time, and so the back pedalling starts with the painter. To refresh memory he visited my house and viewed the almost stripped car to wrap his mind around the workload to be able to quote!! Now he wasn't aware the car had so much work as it has some hail damage, its 40+ f#$%# years old, what was he expecting. He has slaved so hard and I am too perfectionist! I told him I cant critique the finish... as its NOT F$%## FINISHED after 9 %#%$# months.

Now I am not happy about the rims, I said I am happy about the rims, its the bad paint job, the runs, rough finish, visible sand marks that piss me off.Now he says he is only one man with 2 hands, I said yes 2 hands that took my deposit and a further 2k and done fuckall..

Got a message from his wife that I am unreasonable and that I should rather collect my car as is and take it elsewhere....WTF. So I called her and gave a good verbal beating. I cant believe the sods. The car has been there 9 months, easiest job to work on a full stripped car, they been doing all kind of other work except mine and only when I get upset then they work on my car, and then I get blamed for being unreasonable. This after they tell me they are closing up shop and he is going to work for a panel shop as he cant survive on his own...Now I am being unreasonable asking when will they finish my car if they are closing at month end!!

Feel like giving up on this car and just fuck it!!!

More than 90% of the auto industry in SA is like this from what I've seen. After owning cars for almost 6 years there is only ONE workshop that I've found to be any good.

I replaced the gearbox and diff oil in the 318 after the flooding. Now I had the gearbox oil done not long after buying it with no noticeable change, but with this recent oil change there is a huge improvement in gear change feel. All I can think is that the guy who did the oil change for me last just used whatever oil was the cheapest.

My point is that just something as simple as gearbox oil can make a huge difference, but to most anything will do and most have a "That will do" mentality. No apply this mentality to something big like rebuilding a M3 motor or doing body work on a car...

I hope you can find someone who can sort this for you. Was looking forward to seeing another restored car.

Also read the whole thread only now. Do not let an incompetent wannabe make you abandone the project! You are doing more than restoring history.... Perseverance will reward you with a stunning
vehicle .

So while busy with the 850 rear end rebuild my new panel beater gave me a call, almost forgot I had a 1602 restoration!!

Any how he asked me to come take a look at the work before he gives the car a coat of final primer. Since he doesn't want to hide any work he wants me to come take a look see.

Took a drive there yesterday and am very happy to report his work is very nice. Sorted out all the other guys shit work, cleaned up the chassis removing all the rubberizing, re coated. Sealed up joints with sealers and aligned up all the gaps and lines. Really looking smart. So next week its off to the paint shop to order up the 4lt of base and 5lt of clear paint and all the other consumables that the actual painter will need. He hopes to have it sprayed by next week if the weather is in favor.

Rebuilt suspension and newly powder coated rims are all ready to get under that chassis.

Just a teaser pic, btw this is what the area around the car looks like all the time, clean and tidy for such an old lady!

So I finally decided to start on my full restoration of a 1967 1600 02.

The car was originally bought by an owner in Kakamas. After some mechanical mishaps by his son and 2 engine changes he stored the car in 1983.The car was without engine and g/box but in otherwise dry and complete rust free and in good state. It was sold of to a guy in 2010 and a few months later he sold it off to me. I stored the car as I was then busy with the 530MLE.

I decided January that it was time to build my wife her classic car, even though I bought her the 850ci,.. go figure!!

Car was built in Germany, one of the first 2500 1600 off the production line, Bristol grey and blue sparse interior. Black and white speckled carpets. Fitted with 1600 M10 engine which they later stroked for the 2.0l 02's.The engines have been carried through almost unchanged from the early 60's in 1500 , 1600, 1800, 2000 cc format in a wide range of BMW's, 02' range, 2000 coupe's, E12 518 and 520'S and E21 316 and 318. Indestructable. The are the same blocks that BMW williams used in F1 to power them to World victories with 1500cc Turbocharged that could develop almost 1000kw!!

I am doing a full nut and bolt restoration and trying to keep it as original as I can and trying to use as much of the original parts.

Early March I finished with getting the cars paperwork sorted out and a engine added to its papers that I sourced in Durban.

Some pics..

March I stripped it totally and off it went to the panelbeaters. MiniLites are sold off and genuine steelies are now on the car.

I ordered some spares from WallotNesch in Germany.

All new rubbers for doors, windows, seals, bonnets, boot, all suspension rubbers, front shock tower bearings, crome trims, badges, front and rear light gaskets and gasket and chrome inserts for both windscreens.

Also engine spares arrived.

Started with the bottom end, cleaned, checked, sprayed and welsh plugs fitted. All is still standard an no over sizing needed.

Car is being sprayed Fyord Blue and 2 sets of blue original vinyl seats will be repaired to make one good set in original condition. The patterened vinyl panel material is no longer available and I want the original look. The original black and white speckled carpets are also going back in.

Car will look similiar to this.

Will post as I go..

Hi Senhor Luis.
Love the 1st picture, "no just chilling on my pool chair next to my pool and my 2002 having a beer"

Anyway glad to see this project is coming on. It's going to look great when finished.

Good luck with the rest of the project
