My New Project 67' 1600 02

So I finally decided to start on my full restoration of a 1967 1600 02.

The car was originally bought by an owner in Kakamas. After some mechanical mishaps by his son and 2 engine changes he stored the car in 1983.The car was without engine and g/box but in otherwise dry and complete rust free and in good state. It was sold of to a guy in 2010 and a few months later he sold it off to me. I stored the car as I was then busy with the 530MLE.

I decided January that it was time to build my wife her classic car, even though I bought her the 850ci,.. go figure!!

Car was built in Germany, one of the first 2500 1600 off the production line, Bristol grey and blue sparse interior. Black and white speckled carpets. Fitted with 1600 M10 engine which they later stroked for the 2.0l 02's.The engines have been carried through almost unchanged from the early 60's in 1500 , 1600, 1800, 2000 cc format in a wide range of BMW's, 02' range, 2000 coupe's, E12 518 and 520'S and E21 316 and 318. Indestructable. The are the same blocks that BMW williams used in F1 to power them to World victories with 1500cc Turbocharged that could develop almost 1000kw!!

I am doing a full nut and bolt restoration and trying to keep it as original as I can and trying to use as much of the original parts.

Early March I finished with getting the cars paperwork sorted out and a engine added to its papers that I sourced in Durban.

Some pics..

March I stripped it totally and off it went to the panelbeaters. MiniLites are sold off and genuine steelies are now on the car.

I ordered some spares from WallotNesch in Germany.

All new rubbers for doors, windows, seals, bonnets, boot, all suspension rubbers, front shock tower bearings, crome trims, badges, front and rear light gaskets and gasket and chrome inserts for both windscreens.

Also engine spares arrived.

Started with the bottom end, cleaned, checked, sprayed and welsh plugs fitted. All is still standard an no over sizing needed.

Car is being sprayed Fyord Blue and 2 sets of blue original vinyl seats will be repaired to make one good set in original condition. The patterened vinyl panel material is no longer available and I want the original look. The original black and white speckled carpets are also going back in.

Car will look similiar to this.

Will post as I go..

Nice one Luis.

Excellent approach to a restore.

I would love to know the price tag for the components ordered from Germany.

Specially all the trim and chrome pieces...

Have fun on this one!

I ordered the following goodies, see attached pic or attachment. The engine spares I order from the local Midas guy, long term relationship and he always gets me the good makes and good prices. BMW engine spares prices are just too unreasonable to buy from BMW. I also order from overseas where I get the chance.

So for the 1600 which is a common M10 engine used by BMW from the late 50's till the mid 80's from 1500 to the 518/520,316/318 E30. So engine spares are easily obtainable.
Big Ends, EU make
Mains, EU Make
Rings Goetz
Gasket Sets Victor Reinz
New Tensioners and Guides and oil chain
GUD Oil Filter

Visited the panelbeater today and fenders, doors, bonnet and boot off and sanding began. 3 weeks to go.

Couldnt finish my update.. bloody internet..

Here goes.. Panel beaters are slow and I think my other 2002 project car will go elsewhere for body work. 9 months and these okes are still busy..
HERE IS WHERE THEY ARE AT 2 WEEKS BACK..

so while the panel shop has been busy I have just been doing other things, like sourcing small items that I know I will need. Like old style Air Cleaner, Manifold and Single little carb. Sent the air cleaner box and some other little items for sandblast and Powder Coating

Then also stripped off the suspension, stripped to last bolt and sent to sandblasters to be stripped and resprayed in Black Epoxy paint. Now I have started pressing all the new rubber bushes from W&N and assemblying. Steel rims were also sent for sand blasting and are now at my panel beater for a coat of silver.

also sent in 50kg of blots and nuts, washers, bits and pieces for deep electro cleaning and nickel and galv coating.

This is from this car and a few others I stripped, always good to have a box full of nice shiny bolts and so on when rebuilding cars ect. At R8 a kilo, you cant buy new bolts at this price... and looks good when used in a restoration.

So now busy with engine final assembly and body work, so we can start putting everything together.

Some suspension pics.. from a pile of this to...

this.

Panel beaters are ok, but moving to slow for my liking, 9 months and counting, this from me giving them a bare shell. Think my other 2002 project will go elsewhere for the body work.

so far they are here...

So been doing some parts searching, bits and pieces like air cleaner housing, manifold and single carb. Send the rusted air cleaner and some other bits for sand blast and powder coating .
They look like this now..

Over the years and cars strip downs I have amassed alot of bolts, nuts, washers and bits and pieces.( I throw almost nothing away) So sent all 50kg for deep electro cleaning and then nickel and glav plating. You cant buy new bolts ect at the price they charge to make your old stuff loOk like this at R8 per kg!!

Have also now stripped the suspension completly and sent it for sandblast and epoxy coating. The epoxy coating is better than paint, hard but does not chip like powder coating, semi gloss, but chemical resistant, so brake fluid etc does no damage. Re- assembly with new bushes started. Made my own press tool from M10 thread bar, some big washers and nuts...

from this...

to this...

Some engine pics, after some wait, I got my head back and can finally start transforming a cupboard of spares into a 02 engine..all the new bolts make the difference..

I am really hoping to get the body back before Dec, so I can work on it over the season. Seats have been fully re-done out of two seats to keep the material original.. will update some more I hope soon.

amazing stuff!
The re-nickeling and galv of those bolts gave me a good idea.
Would you be able to PM me the details of the company you used by any chance?
The engine is looking fantastic, looks brand new. As for the internals of the engine, what was done there? I see you said there was no boring out of anything so I assume the original stuff was just cleaned, refurbed and thrown back in?

Body is looking great, now just for some colour!

The company is local , but I am sure you can find a similiar company up in your area. Its a common practice. This is a cold method, which importently does not damage any plastic bits that might be on the parts, like the door locks.

Engine internals, new rings, big ends, mains, full gaskets sets, o-rings, chain, tensioners, guides, head was rebuilt, tried to replace as much as possible with new goodies.
