My 95 740i didn't want to start one morning and a mech advised me to squirt oil into each cylinder which i did and it started.... he said compression is probably low.
I then did a compression test:

left bank dry wet Right bank dry wet (kpa)
1. 900 1100 1. 1100 1150
2. 1000 1150 2. 1050 1070
3. 1000 1100 3. 1050 1150
4. 1050 1100 4. 1100 1050
Now it starts when its cold and struggles to at normal operating temp.
also idles rough doesn't smoke or use oil.
test was done without disabling fuel pump.

any advice , thoughts please....

Those compression figures are a little low (20%) from what I know of these engines but remarkeably even for one of these M60's indicating even wear which is good.

I definitly dont think low enough to cause problems, but you could try running a thicker oil or even adding quality two stroke to a tank to test the result.

In fact it's not worth me guessing untill you have run the car's diagnostics to rule out other possible causes.

All cylinders came up on the wet test indicating oil sealing the cylinders , so yes compression is low . Every engine has its limits , I do not know the V8 limits ( Imho below 1000 is low ) .
How is the cars oil consumption ? BMW often say 1.5 litres per 1000 km is acceptable .

Thanks guys... including having car trouble i also had computer trouble.
The car was plugged into a diagnostics machine and showed no faults.
I understand the thicker oil theory bt not sure about 2 stroke in the tank??

(Ray) My car is well within bmw's oil consumption limits.

I did a general search and came up with low fuel pressure caused by fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator.

Also is there any way to test the water temp sensor.

:praise:
