My Accident with my new 3 series

On the 16th of August I was in an accident with my 2 week old 328i.
So my wife came to pick me up at work on that Friday.
As we were heading west on Beyers Naude we came to a stop in a very long queue at the John Vorster/Ysterhout robot.
Just after stopping, for about 10 seconds, I saw a white polo vivo heading straight for us from behind. He did not know the robot was red and that everyone was stationary. He was traveling at about 90-100 km/h.
For a split second I saw the car in my rear view mirror and put my foot on the brake and scream at my wife to hold on.
The impact was really hard!! This being my very first accident ever I can really compare it to anything or anyone else's experience. For me it felt very hard. With the momentum of the impact I hit the car infront of me as well.

Not even 30 seconds after the incident the emergency response vehicle from EMER-G-MED stopped right next to us. These guys were a blessing!!
They immediately assisted my wife which at that time was just 5 weeks pregnant. They took here to Flora clinic for a check-up while I waited for the AA flatbed to load my car.

Anyway thank God for my wife and unborn child, both doing really well.
I am now sold on the safety of a BMW.

We were also very fortunate for a great broker that decided to write-off the car and replace it for me with a new 100% identical one.

Here are some before and after pics:

I am really glad you guys are all okay! with rear damage like that I would not want a repaired car, excellent that you got a new one!

I just have to say it, but how do you not see a red robot and a bunch of stationary cars? some people hey.. :bangdesk:

nice story

I like how alert you were, to notice the accident about to happen, more than 90% of the average drivers out there would not even have noticed it about to happen.

out of interest sake, what was your excess of insurance, as essentially thats what you paid for a "brand new BMW"

To be honest, with this incident that happened in Pinetown last week, you have to be extra alert. No more relaxing cruises. I hate this!!

From an insurance perspective, I had the waiver of excess option, as well as the credit shortfall option. Both those options came into play with this claim. Without the waiver of excess it would have been R25,000 upfront.

Hi Bud,

We have had many bad reports about insurance companies.

So somebody who sorts out a claim of this magnitute so quickly needs to be mentioned.

Who was it.

Glad your safe, and although I am pretty sure your car looked like a crushed tin can afterwards, it clearly did its job. At 90 thats a pretty damm serious impact.

German engineering where you need it most :)

yup....."honour" the insurance you are with, so that we can see how its supposed to be done.

PS

Leonard, had an ex-colleague "lady" in my shop today, with a bit of plastic bumper rash on her VW car, I gave her your details, so she says that she might come to see ya tomorrow.

I am with Santam, but through PWV Brokers.
They are situated in Weltevreden Park, Just opposite Hillfox.

Have been with them for 5 years already, no issues!

Sorry for the pics. I had to remove the registration numbers first.
So according to the report from the assessor, the damage amounted to over R300K. Chassis was kinked and rear axle and drive shaft was broken. Damage to exhaust and transmission as well.

Really sucks for something like that to happen to a brand new car.
But I do think that Polo slowed down alot before it hit you.
Doesnt look like an 90-100km/h crash.

In the police report I stated that it was 80km/h. But the assesor said that it was more. Even the guy that was infront of me said it was more than that. What you dont see on the photos is that the polo actually went underneath the rear end. Unfortuneatly I dont have the photos of the polo but it had no front end. Engine was gone. I think the driver was intoxicated because before I could get my hands on him they loaded him in an amnulance and left.

So glad you guys are fine!

That does look like a seriously hard impact!

What a shame for such a beautiful car. It's a great thing insurance is replacing. The amount of chassis damage must be unthinkable.
