Motorplan Extension Question

Hi,

I have a 2014 320d M Performance. I bought the car in 2017 with 50,000kms. Its has just clocked 65,000kms, the motor-plan expires in Oct this year. I have been quoted R20k to extend by a year, my issue is I won't do the 10,000 kms in the year.
What would forum users suggest, the most expensive part replaced was the Sport brakes which cost R15k, the normal service parts are not a concern out of motor plan.

Thanks

Motorplan = R20000
Oil and brakes service = +/-R20000

If your brakes service and other smaller bits will fall within that year I would just pay for the motorplan extension and at least you have peace of mind that -god forbid- if something goes wrong, it's covered.

BTW I paid the same amount for 330d motorplan extension :dunnoanymore:

Also I didn't know that the sport brakes cost so much :skit:

Im not sure what you asking...

But in my opinion, not worth extending the plan...those cars are solid. And just get as much replaced before the plan expires.

Get a full diagnostic on your car done elsewhere and have it printed. Have bmw replace anything thats of concern before it expires. They'll do anything to avoid doing major work on your car in plan - my experience.

Motorplan doesn’t like to pay, they find ways to argue simple things such as brakes even, this was my experience even with my M5, peace of mind if major things break though, if you know most of the common problems are sorted, then don’t renew, otherwise pays your monies

Thanks for the comments, brakes were so high cause they had to replace the discs and pads. My car has the drilled, grooved M Performance discs.

Damn and I had a fit when i paid 11k for my 2012 F30 320i motorplan extension in 2015 at 72 000km

47k for motorplan extension is madness!

Remember BMW will take into account your mileage when quoting an extension. its cheaper to extend time instead of mileage. f your brake are good I wont extend. Most people think the car will self destruct after the plan expires. :biglol:

i would extend it at that price...i will never drive a newish luxury car out of plan again....different car but its not fun spending R100 000 of your hard earned money on a non //M car :=):

Im taking a chance now with my 330i but with my F30 320i damn. They ended up replacing turbo, steering racking, HPFP damper, discs and pads and something else I can’t remember this was just after motorplan extension. Amounted to 80k and sold the car soon after that.

personally its just too risky...ive burnt my fingers..and ive seen it with friends across the 3 german brands too...chain failures...gearbox etc.

my E46 330i was a joy to own though...no issues..still have one here that im chilled about

I would investigate a warranty extension, as opposed to a motorplan extension. Usually cheaper than motorplan, and then you get coverage for somethign major like a turbo going or gearbox etc. But you would still have to pay for servicing and wear and tear (brakes, suspension, etc). But at your mileage there won't be much in terms of wear and tear.

If BMW don't offer a factory warranty extension, there are a lot of aftermarket options (i know that SMG recommend Innovation warranties). The good news is that because you are still in motorplan, you can get an aftermarket warranty that is like a extension of the factory warranty where there are no claim limits (e.g. Engine failure is not limited to X value). This is different to if you are getting a "pre-owned" warranty where there are usually limits on each category.

So do some research and find out what the options are. I wouldn't want to own that car without at least a warranty.

I think M/plan extension at the price is worth it. I have always reasoned that I f the sum total for brakes etc. are close to the extension price, I would take it. Then you are covered for the R80K surprise if it happens.

I am weary of any after market products as although the claim unlimited, there are always T&C's. So they will find a way of not paying. Examples are wear and tear isn't covered. Drive belts and hoses aren't covered, and so if a belt fails which causes a further catastrophic failure, the will not pay out.

My experience and 2c anyway...

All German cars give hassles out of plan and all the stealers will try to avoid any hefty claims in the last few kms or months of a plan.

From my reseach, BMW (on average for non M cars) is not as hefty on costs as Audi or MB out of plan.

However, I will always keep a Japanese vehicle in my two car garage, just in case...

R2 per kilometer is nuts. If you are really worried get an aftermarket warranty..

Also, I'm pretty sure R20k for brakes & oil service is not accurate.

I did a one year extension @ R 13 500 from January till end of December 2017 for my 2012 E90 320d Exclusive. The mileage was about 50k kilometers when I did it. Apart from the peace of mind it provided, the only benefit was a minor service done in December 2017 just before the extension expired. Even then the Dealership had to ask for permission first from BMW to do the service with only filters and oil being replaced!

I was contemplating extending for another 12 months (for the whole of 2018) but at about R 18 000 (odometer that stage 57k kilometers) it was a more difficult decision to make. Thanks to the excellent advice I got here on the forum I decided not to do it. I traded the car in on 21 December 2018 (mileage 65k kilometers) without having to have spent a cent more on it during the year, was not even due for a service yet as I only did about 8k kilometers since the last one.

So in retrospect even the extension I did for R 13 500 was probably a bit of a waste as chances are slim for a E90 LCI diesel with such low mileage to be prone to have expensive issues. I suppose the driving style of previous owners also can play a part.

OMG! I hope they gave you a decent price at least?
I'd have jumped at purchasing that car! :blueCry:

I'd personally get an aftermarket warranty, SA Warranties are pretty good from - a friend of mine has had to put in multiple claims (across multiple vehicles) with them and has never had any issues.

They do cover wear and tear as well and are priced well, 2 years unlimited mileage. Any dealership or RMI approved mechanic can have the work done without issues.

My current car has a warranty with SA Warranties and I plan on getting one when I find the right 320D for myself.
