model black out?

Hi All

What is the most effective and durable way to black out the model number these days?

Can it be done without removing the numbers or is a better finish achieved if removed?

Either way, what does the process entail?

;)

I removed my badges, they are just stuck on with double sided tape, so I got some thin fishing line and cut them off, then peel off the left over tape and polish, I prefer them removed to painted, but it's personal preference.

Plasti Dip

Step 1: Buy a can of Black Plasti Dip at any Builders Warehouse.

Step 2: Mark off a border around the badge with masking tape.

Step 3: Spray 3 - 5 coats of Plasti dip in the marked off rectangle.

Step4: When dry. Simply peel off masking tape and plasti dip around the badge.

For the hard to reach parts, like the circles inside the number 8, simply use a tweezer and pull off.

Like magic the number will be black and the rest of th ecar still clean.

YouTube is also your friend. Just search there for more vids

You will have a head ache putting them back in full alignment...

Plastidip works 100% and is totally safe on the surrounding paintwork.

That's if you ever intend on putting them back, I reckon I'm going the full route and changing my exhaust tips to a 320i one... people be like WHAAAAT!! haha

Thanks for all the feedback! ;)

Does plastidip allow for even coverage? Would it not run so the top has a thinner layer than the bottom or does it dry so quick that you should not have to worry about it?

I have seen many different cars on the road with blacked out badges, in particular the Range Rover Evoques. Would they possibly also be done with plastidip or is their a painting option that can be explored as well?

Would plastidip not peal off over time? What about a high pressure wash every weekend?

The Range rovers come factory fitted with black badges,

as stated above, removing the badges would be a headache,

Plasti dip is a good compromise,

it is durable, but obviously reasonably so.. I assume you're talking about high pressure washers at the car wash? Just tell them not to touch the badge area!

As for coverage, it is quite thick and rubber based, if you spray it on evenly it will not run.

If it does peel, just redo it. You have a whole can of Plasti dip.

It sticks to everything, but can be easily peeled off without leaving any residue. You need to be careful when peeling it off the paint, if you are not careful you can pull it off the numbers as well .
