Hi there,

I am new to the forum and was hoping that I could utilize some of your knowledge please.

I have been interested in the Mini Clubman for quite some time and have recently decided to look into buying one.

I found one privately and was hoping you guys could advise whether to stay clear of it or not.

2010 Mini Clubman 1.6
140 000km
Price: R112 000
FSH at Forsdick BMW.
2nd owner, his wife got the car in 2012 with 80 000km on the clock. They have done majority long distance commutes as they live 80km out of town. He said the the only problem they had was a solenoid valve that was replaced 2 years ago and other than that, nothing at all.

Is this deal a good idea? What are common problems to look out for?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Regards
Alex

Hi Alex,

There are quite a few problems with the "S" models, but the standard Cooper/Clubby is pretty reliable. That oil pump solenoid and the thermostat is just about the only two common mechanical failures on the Cooper/Clubby.

At the current mileage I would start to look at suspension components, like lower control arm bushes and shocks, as these could be at the end of their life. These might not be worn out yet, but know they don't last forever. Budget about R10k for a suspension refresh. Find a testing center that can test these components and if they are worn you can negotiate a bit on the price.

Other than that, these are excellent cars.

Hi Carbon,

Thank you for the response. Appreciate it!

I've read a bit about things like the clutch failing and it costing an arm and a leg to replace? I've also heard that these kind of parts are only available through the dealers. Is this true or would I be able to source parts elsewhere other than BMW?

Regards
Alex

Engine parts are a bit hard to source outside BMW, but I not impossible. The clutches can be replaced by single mass units, like Valeo, costing much less.

Other service and suspesnion items can be bought from Goldwagen/Midas etc, or our local forum parts-guy, moranor@axis.
