Initially I ordered 435i Convertible with options = 960k. After 3 months I then wanted to order BMW Performance Exhaust and only to be told my car will arrive in January. This is when I decided to go for M4 Convertible.
Today, I drove next to 435i Convertible today. Like many people, the driver and passenger were taking pictures of the M4 Convertible. Its 400k more than 435i vert. It drivers, looks, feels, invokes emotions that make 435i vert the more overpriced car. I think all these cars are overpriced.
What did I get for 400k premium over 435i Convertible?
- More power/torque. 435i/335i vert are fast by the clock. M4 vert is fast by the heartbeat. It can also be lethal to stop your heart if you not careful, get carried away. Its thrilling and dangerous unlike E92 M3. Its faster than E92 M3, slower than M4 Coupe/Sedan. Its everything you wanted from C63 AMG madness.
- M-Personality/Emotion. When in Sport+ mode, your heart beats faster and then gear changes are like medical CPR. It kicks your back like its fighting with you.
- M-DCT gearbox. Miles ahead of 335i DCT and 435i ZF 8spd. M-DCT is married to the steering wheel, engine and suspension. Gear changes are sublime. Feels like ZF 8spd in comfort mode and takes DCT to another level in other modes. You feel the difference between Comfort, Sport, Sport+ settings unlike other gearbox where there are marginal differences. Only one negative...parking can be jerky because it will only move when you press pedal unlike DCT and ZF 8spd.
- M-Engineered suspension. Unlike 435 vert, M4 has additional carbon fibre stiffening parts to make it the best handling 4-seater convertible. Ride is firm but not uncomfortable either. Even in comfort mode, its stiffer than 335/435 vert. In a straight line, its expensionally well composed. Around a corner, you must respect it. Its not an M4 Coupe.
- M-Designed car. You will not admire 435i Convertible's ass unlike the M4. People take pictures from behind because it has bold wide design and colors to match its stance.
- Exhaust/Engine. Comfort mode is really nice, exhaust, engine are quiet but you get slight sounds amplified through the speaker to remind you its an M-Car. Sport mode makes exhaust growl and louder with burps on up and down shifts crackles/pops. Sport + mode makes exhaust scream. I think its in Sport+ mode where you miss the E92 V8 because the more V8 screams, the better it sounds. This one sounds louder but not nicer.
This car will be hardly driven enthusiastically by me. BUT damn its really an engineering masterpiece. You can enjoy its thrills in mid range which is satisfying for me. After the BMW M4 Performance Driving Course, I will be doing launch controls and occasional drag racing. Probably more reviews to come. I'm a happy person and Thank God the 435i Convertible, deal fell through.
