M3 g-spec e36 needs work

Hi guys, thinking of getting a e36 m3 g-spec from a guy I kinda know, problems with car 1st and foremost engine is seized up, just glanced over it and saw cam box removed and is in the boot along with the other top parts (coils, tappet cover etc.) Now he told me there was a gearbox issue and after they replaced the box the engine won't turn (category: unbelievable, cause why start striping the head) exterior is good, not great but decent, interior fault:both door panels are off. Haven't driven in 3 years (licence also 3 years behind).
Now the thing is my 328i e36 is nearly done (interior to do and she's pretty much ready to roll, bar water pump and cam sensor which I'm still to replace)
He's offered me a swap deal, but I'm not too keen and told him this to which he replied I should make an offer on the M, this is where you guys come in, what do I offer him keeping in mind the engine and box will be pulled (labour will do myself) as I've not owned 1 of these, parts wise what am I looking at spending for a complete engine and (possibly gearbox) overhaul.
Thx in advance.

Oh and suspension wise I'm not sure as the 1st time I came across this car was about 4 years ago, when it needed new control arms which I replaced and it drove like a dream back then.

In that condition, under 40k offer will still be generous. Proper engine rebuild will cost 35k at minimum. Plus suspension (10k), gearbox (10k), interior + time & labor (even though its you doing the work). Will still bring it up to (& over) 100k when done.

In my opinion... will be a nice long term project.

Yip sounds like a lot of work... If you up for the challenge, then go for it...
Gearbox for the m3 might be a challenge... part wise.

Do you have pics of the two cars and conditions? easier to judge

You can get one with much less work needed but still needing some TLC for 60 to 75k
That might be a better option.

In the current state you mention, you will be looking at much more than 35k to fix the motor, probably closer to 45k if the block is severely damaged and you want to fix it properly with OEM parts.

if you pay 40k for the car and spend 60k on the motor and gearbox you then end up in the 100k region.

i bought a "clean" car about 6 years ago and have spent 120k already on fixing stuff up.

i can PM you the cost of my motor rebuild. NOT FUN

my honest opinion.

get him down on price, buy another one.
then you have a parts car, build up 1 decent one from the 2 and then sell the left over parts.

second hand M3 parts sell well.

in the end if you do it right you could end up saving some cash.

Its sad but a neglected M3 is worth more stripped than complete.

aah crap I see someone dented the door, besides the interior that's gonna cost me 5k (real leather) I'm still to fit the badges and strips, excuse the dirt, wasn't washed in a while.

Technician is right - in that condition its a parts car - the benefit is you could strip it an make some money if you are prepared to sell the parts loose over a period of time. It could fund another project

I would not pay more than R25,000
