Low rumble at idle

Hi Guys

Have you guys experienced the following symptoms on a 97 4dr M3.

When I start her in mornings for 1st time, the car makes a low level rumble that you can feel when sitting in the car while she idles. The problem is aggrevated when reversing, getting clutch control with handbrake up with reverse gear.

Problem is as soon as you drive and she heats up it goes away and only happens when the car is ice cold again.

what gives?

had a similar problem, chech the hydraulic tensioner that houses the v-belt shock, sorted the problem, hope this helps, cheers

I also have 1997 M3 and recently had to replace...

1. the two rubber gearbox mountings
2. gearbox to driveshaft rubber coupling - rather expensive
3. gearbox selector shaft seal - manifested as gearbox oil leak
4. all hydraulic fluid - clutch works from same system as brakes

The rubbers are very easy to check on a lift with the aid of a torch.

If rubbers are shot can cause vibration against under body, exhaust, heat shield, etc.

Maybe worth the effort just to inspect anyway, at this age.

Good luck and keep us posted

I checked tensioners at lunch. Got a friend to release clutch slowly with handbrake up. Noise is definately coming from the front. And by sounds of it it is either the Air con tensioner or water pump. will remove that belt the weekend just to check if the noise goes away.

removed both belts on saturday morning, the noise remains with the belts removed.

The search continues.:banghead:

Is the car idling normal? If its got a rough idle it could be Throttle possition switch or the idle control valve. My car does this lil show in them mornings, rough idle and rumbles a bit. But once warmed up she is good to go..

I have very same issue. Any other advise for a laid off father of two on low budget?
