Losing my BMWginity

Greetings noble BMW forumites :praise:, this is my first post here.

As the title suggests, I am looking into acquiring one of these awesome machines as my first car.

My dad has always been a Mercedes man and it must be genetic as for most of my life this has been the case for myself as well.

For some strange reason I recently fell quite in love with BMWs. It may have to do with the fact that I've started going out and testing a few cars to see what's what. I'm currenty in an environment where a car isn't really necessary (that little winefarm called Stellenbosch) so I've got abobut R 30 000 to spend on a second hand car. It can't be a dog but I don't expect a minter either.

It turned out that one could get quite a tidy early 90s W 124 Merc, like a 230/260/300e for that amount of cash and this seemed like a very logical option since its such a dependable car. And it's really a pretty old thing compared to the absued Tazz or Citi Golf one would get for R 30k.

Enter the BMW part...

I found a manual 1990 E 34 535i with 340 000 on the clock at a park & sell for R 27500. It has some very nice mags and its interior is nearly perfect (a rarity) and it gives off the impression of being really well looked after. Obviously, this doesn't mean it has been.

Went for a drive and I really liked it. :inlove: I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone here; it's beautifully understated, magnificent and insanely powerful. And it's one of them rare manuals. Not bad for less than R 30 000.

I would probably have bought it, had I known more about the car's history etc - there was some story about the head gasket that I didn't like at all and I'm not too keen on turning a R 30 000 car into a R 50 000 project.

My question, after this lengthy intro, is this: what BMW is going to be in the best condition for around R 30 000, with some decent power? I've checked around and I see lots of E 34s going for around that amount. I saw some E 36s and E 38 740i's (amazingly) going for around that price as well.

I understand that it's a very open and vague-ish question and from what I can tell buying one of those is a total crapshoot, but I would love some input.

Greetings Sol!
Welcome to the forums dude, glad you posting here - you gonna get some seriously good advise.

I've done the same thing. Looked at getting myself a BMW, joined up here :)

Anyway, first off - excellent choice on car. Everything else is inferior. Hehe!
Second off, the car that you've looked at, the E34 are truly awesome! Just so happens, Jandre is selling his E34 540i 1996. Check it out here http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=24450

It's probably the neatest, well maintained E34 around :)

For the price range, I'm fairly sure that you can pick anything from E36, E34 or E39. But I'm sure other peeps will come along with some awesome advise!

Welcome to the forum

Well I would say the e34 is a good choice, though you will be looking at more maintenance on a cheaper car, but on cars like the e34 or other 5's and 7's you are more likely to find a good condition one, due to the demographic of the owners :) less chance that it has been stuffed up by a yob of some sort

:ty: for the great feedback so far. Much appreciated.

I will probably get in touch with Jandre - that does look like a nice example!

Something that I was wondering - I'm specifically looking for a manual and I'm only likely to give that up if a bargain automatic comes along. How expensive is the auto-manual tranny transformation? I'm guessing there's an older thread I should be searching for :fencelook:

When I priced the auto to manual swap for my E36 it was around 5k for parts and I wouldve done the labour myself but people have told me around 2k.

15k will get you a nice e90 6 speed swapped in by Gizmo.

Jandre's E34 is an auto.

i could be wrong but the V8 had a very different gearbox... i dont think the I6 box will fit...

I don't know about the I6 gearbox, but I know that most use the 5 speed from the E34 530i as it has the same engine as the 540 only smaller.

Older 5 series is good to look at as most people are afraid of maintenance and fuel economy. So you can usually find some at a good price. :thumb:

I'm probably one of them...how bad is maintenance on an E 34 if it's only going to be doing weekly driving, not daily?

It depends on what you get. A 540i would have 8 spark plugs, more expensive filters, heavier on fuel, ect. A 520i would be cheaper in all those areas. So far I've found that second hand parts for the E34 isn't as widely available as say an E30 or E36.

Overall though, I don't think the maintenance for an E34 is much more than any other car if you look at what things cost at, let's say, ford dealers or even toyota. If you're willing to go to the right places then you should be able to find secondhand parts.

You'll have things that need replacing with any old car. You just will. I do know that the E34 is a great car, no matter the engine size and is pretty modern and safe. I also think you would be able to find an E34 in better condition than an old 3 series for the same money. Obviously there are exceptions.

Don't be in too much of a rush though. Take your time and keep an eye on sites like Gumtree so you can get an idea of what the cars tend to go for. Also keep an eye for any cars that might be in your region. You might be lucky and find a hidden gem :thumb:
