Does any one have experience with a loose twin mass flywheel on a e46 320d. Does it mean I need to buy a new one or is it something that could be fixed:argh:

By loose I am assuming you mean it has to much play in it? As far as I know then it must be replaced.

Loose ?

How do you know its loose...

Its highly unlikely, because if a bolt did come out, there would be pieces of flywheel/clutch all over the place, and probably a hole in your gearbox casing.

Its possible, hell I had the subframe came loose on the E46 the other day, so i guess anything is possible, but...

Define the symptons/reasons why you think its loose ?

If it is loose, you can just retorque them... but im now interested :)

hmm, if your flywheel has play .. you should replace it immediately ..

You might not notice it immediatelly all at once .. but it WILL wear other items prematurely .. for example your diff bush, clutch and your engine mountings .. the left side mountings usually tear first .. you'll be lucky if nothing else breaks
specially on the diesel with all them torques and vibrations ;) hehe

Anybody ever have flywheel bolts shear off ? I was an appy and had a 2 litre Fiat , one day I towed a car to my pals place , only prob this cars front wheel got hot at times ,so we stopped to check a few times . As we got to his house the wheel bearing siezed and I felt the car jerk .We eventually got his car moved and I parked my car . It would not start the next morning , starter noise but no engine turning , found five flyhell bolts broken off - only one left !!! lucky break

The story goes...Years back in P.E. an Opel tuner got killed at a Stock car race. While standing over or next to car being revved. Flywheel came lose ripped trough everything him included.

I don't know how true it is.I wasn't there but this is the story that did the rounds of how Attie got killed. This happened late 90s or early 2000s.

With so many moving parts a tank full of flammable liquid, plus the speed we travel in. Makes you think we take so much for granted

:nonono: if its vibrating like hell when say idling then its the flywheel (mass) - i did the wifes car a short while ago, you can get the kit from Star Break and clutch for a fraction of the cost and get it put int for about R1500.

Check the rubber coupling between the propshaft and the gearbox. BMW calls it a universal joint. Will only vibrate when driving.

Vibration damper and universal joint ok. When you engage the clutch slowly(at stand still) the vibration starts. I thought it was the clutch. I took off the gearbox and clutch a saw that the front part of the flywheel(where the pressure plate grips) has a lot of play on it. I can move it to the left or right with about 5mm to 8mm. If you look at the part spec it consists of two parts hence the name twin mass flywheel. I haven't taken it off yet, but is it something that can be repaired or should I replace?
