hi all
This is the one I was looking at
http://www.sedgeclasscars.com/details.php?CarID=593
We already have a 1984/5 - 635csi in the family and it is a great drive when it works.
It is an auto, full house; electric seats etc. with 280000km on the clocks and is in bad shape. After the accident, Dad lost interest in the car. I did find some replacement parts and Dad repaired the damage. The motor has been rebuilt twice, (Motor cooked and burnt a hole in piston one size of a R2 coin not me; Dad again hence why he is banned from drive my 540I without me in the car), first bunch of

BMW Specialists charged us R25000 to rebuild the motor and other bits and pieces and then said they could not fix it and we needed a new computer box, which would cost R11K. So I bought one in the UK for 140 Pounds – with taxes etc. – R1700.00
That did not fix it.
Year later
Round Two – Feb 2010 new mechanic motor repair guy strips the motor and phone us. Only the one piston had been replaced, the work on the rest of the motor was so bad. No compression, pistons wobbling around like jelly etc.
The motor has been redo top to bottom - 10 months’ work later
But now it is electrics – going in this week to be sorted
We also need to remove the rust (living 200m from the sea) and re-spray the body; paint has faded and redo the leather
Total cost today 50k in 3 years and it is still not running probable
So I was thinking of getting a better working model and using the old one as spares
I actually got to a point with this car of offering my Dad money for the car, so I could crush the wreck and put it of its misery and ours
But Dad is attached to the thing; we have “owned†it for 15 years now, many memories
Driving from Pietersburg to PE, Moving from JHB to East London and discovering that my “newish†325 was not strong enough to tow the trailer with my whole life on it, so after 50kms and swapping over to the 635 to do the duty, Yep Dad designed his own tow bar for the car made out of stainless steel as well, towing our 1965 Ford racing from Pietersburg to East London (5 years later the Ford rusted away). Been phoned by the mechanic to say “Sorry sir we have damaged your, we dropped off the jacks onto its side†6 weeks to fix that and here is the kicker, fixed panels where painted in the East London Mercedes Benz factory – the only guys who could match the paint - And many more
There is a part of me that wants to hold on to the car, but it is just a car or has it become something more?
