You should up your price range to 200-220. Avoid the early models especially on the E65 and also E60 (but less so). Don't ever buy an e65 if your budget is R150k, you will be bankrupt very soon...

I have been trying to talk the old man out of the e65 for a while now ... i know the early models gave a lot of electronic sh*t and it ain't a cheap car to fix.

He has been stuck on a E65 forever but I managed to get him out of that mindset.

I drove a 330d today for R159 000 a 2005 model ...man that car goes like its possessed , but I am a sucker for the E60.

The pre-facelift E90 never really struck me as a wow looking stunner.

I am going to Durban to look at an E60 , they are so hard to find :cursin: or atleast in the Eastern Cape :banghead:

Look, make no mistake, if you pick up a clean E65 post 2004, you are in for one spectacular car, provided you pay the right money for it.....

2005 E65 730d's base models are trading around 130k and then they have 80 to 100k on the clock... its frikken shocking...

745 FTW, provided tht you are careful.

There is a bucket load of value to be had, as NOBODY wants these cars I have discovered, regardless of condition and km, if its out of motorplan, your screwed.... ask me I know....

But for somebody bargain hunting, you can find something awesome, but I do agree you should up your budget to around 200kish.

look , I LOVE the E65 , it is just the ultimate in luxury and it is an insanely beautiful machine , but I am scared of them out of motorplan.

I think the E60 is a good compromise ...it is much closer to an E65 than an E90.

The thing is , my old man will probably put 5000km on it per year at max ,probably more like 2000 - 3000 km, it is gonna be parked in the garage for 99.99999% of the time , he has a company car that he drives and gets fuel for free so the BMW is gonna be for him to go on a Sunday afternoon drive every other weekend.

So I am sure that chances are he won't run into many problems in the vehicles lifetime.

I think we tend to want to look past the problems on the E65's because they are just so damn beautiful.

We are going to finance through BMW , they are just much more competitive with interest rates , this might just give us enough play to be able to go up to the R200k bracket.

For 200k you can get a lovely E65.... I'll go shopping with you...

THing with the E65's, do not buy before 2004, the V8's have a difficualt pipe to get too that leaks.... thats pretty much it, rest of the stuff is standard BMW..... Oil change cost me like R700 on the diesel from the agents, pads I sorted for 700 (rear) ect ect.

Maintanace for sure is not comparable to a 3 series, lets be honest and say that its anything from a 1/4 more expensive but more realistically, its virtually 1/2 more.. but then your going to have the same issue with the E60...

I knw the E65's fairly well, and love them to pieces, I am selling mine now to consolidate some finances, but i'll be sporting either a E60 550i or a 750i in the very near future......

Hi. Going the e60 route is ok but seems like there is a issue with the n62 engine. I bought a 545i with 140k on the clock and the thing smoked like a steam train on take off. Reading up on the overseas forums brought up a lot of cases with the smoke issue, some saying its valve stem seals and others saying its the crankcase breathers. I say its skipped oil services if you look at the service interval setup of the e60. I returned the car and got a 545 with true service history. Great car!

Can't be too sure about skipped services as it seems BMW is getting even more ridiculous wit their service intervals.

Yup, I know of a 745i owner who bought the car new, the first service was only at 40000km according to the OBD...

What I saw with the a bad n62 is that if you let it idle for a long period like at a robot than you will start to see white smoke coming out the exhaust. When I returned the car it wouldnt start smoking at the dealer lol, had to let it idle for 5 min before it started. Do this test before buying a 45.

Thats just stupid.....

Next you will have engine oil that is "life time"

LOL, I am very sure that they are very close to that breakthrough.

Any oil is lifetime oil, if you never change the oil the engine will eventually seize up thus at the end of its "life time", like BMW life time gearbox and diff oil :)
