Looking for a second hand X3

hi,
My Mrs. is due for an upgrade and has always liked the X3.

the budget is around the 130k mark.
seems to be alot of X3's around that mark.
2004 upwards.

personal preference: diesel, automatic
obviously the lower the mileage the better.

what should i look out for? what is the best option?
would the 2.5 or 2.0lt be better than a diesel?
is buying a second hand diesel X3 a mistake?

or is this budget just too low for a really good one?
should i rather be looking at another model?
never really looked at the X range till now.
need some advice.

Any second hand vehicle is only as reliable as how the previous owner looked after it. So if you find one wiht a Full Service History preferably from the agents you should be ok.

Talking from experience, having driven my brother-in-law's 2.0 lt petrol, the petrol model did not have enough power for a vehicle of that type, you would be better of going for the diesel option...

Just my 2 cents here.

All X3's are 4WD

think i was confusing the X1, S-drive and X-drive.
also most car dealerships aren't sure what the car actually is and have seen many advertised as a 4x2.

ok good. now i know thanks.

X3 diesel manual you will be able to get. Push your budget up to 150, and get a one owner X3 with reputable service history...
Look out for diff noises.. Watch out for loose nitty gritty in the engine compartment bay...

Don't look for one that has got lipstick and powder put on, meaning a one that has been cleaned up too much at the valet.
Smell the oil cap and dipstick. Must not smell like old smoke. Make sure the current owner was not using cheap diesel...

Well....... Almost all of them are 2WD lately, because most transfer cases are broken.
Ask Zaleonardz - He will give you a lot of pointers.

Was about to comment the same thing. Wouldn't worry much about the motors, transfer cases going to be the pricey item of concern.

I suggest that you re look at the 2.5 option, it is very thirsty. The 2.0d is a great option but higher mileage diesels either tend to go forever or cost you an arm and leg!

Why has the 3.0lt petrol had no mention yet? M54B30 is a solid motor and has plenty torque to haul a X3 body around...Also it should be better on fuel than the 2.5lt.
