Apparently the car went into limp mode.... and the respose is.... head gasket.... might be R15k... this is the guy whos first quote was for R4k cos the powersteering pipes were leaking by the pump...:hammerhead:

Where can i get a 2nd opinion on why limp mode and what ti do and how to fix? Jacques from fastserv in pta has become busy so he over quotes and throws a quick fix at twice the price.... (wanted a mate to replace both n54 turbos when it wasnt even the turbos.... ) next opinion?

Why not pay someone to run a diagnostic on the car first? Few hundred Rands worth of advice versus thousands on the wrong fix?

N14 motor? Has the car been using water? Granted, these motors are fickle things and do have a problem with their heads warping, but I agree a second opinion is needed.

More info...

Apparently the mechanic where the car is standing says he put some chemicals in the water reservoir and it changed colour.
This means co2 in the water which means prob gasket.

She said at some point when driving the car it did need about 500ml - 1litre of water but the gauge didnt rise in temp more than a third from max...

is this chemical story rubbish?

Boet, you don't know half of it. You have to strip out the air filter and complete intake to get to the injectors. To get to the CAS, you have to strip the whole dash out. These cars were engineered by Beelzebub himself.

its like an eye dropper test. so you take some coolant from the expansion tank or wherever & you drop it in the test kit & it turns a certain colour if coolant is contaminated due to head gasket failure.

The head gasket tester kits are very good, I have one in the garage as well. Very handy :coolShake:

so, on inspection we found the belt snapped.
then checked all pulleys etc and found the Crank pulley has torn its outer half from the inner half.

Now I need

so .
Obviously the waterpump (driven from the SC wasnt turning)> :(

funny thing is that the power steering pump is apparently electric (and should work regardless) but there is no power steering????

or is it somehow connected to it having gone into limp mode? blown a fuse? caused by the prev idiot who replaced the PS hoses???:blueCry:

@Enzio..where di you get your 1 & what was the cost?

Sorry for the late reply, I inherited mine from my brother when he moved to the UK, so not sure where he bought it.

@fluffy, crank pulley failure is fairly common on these cars. Surprising that your water pump failed along with the pulley and belt since it is driven off of the SC and not by the belt.

Good luck getting it fixed

well... with the crank pulley seperating totally.... the belt was not turning ANYTHING... so the waterpump was not turning...

Hi, correct - perhaps I misunderstood your previous post where mention what you need to replace. The water pump did not fail, it just stopped turning.

Anyway, good luck getting it sorted. Now is perhaps the right time to fit a shorter belt, tensioner stopper and a 17% reduction pulley
