limp home mode

What causes and E36 auto to go into limp home mode?

for those unfamiliar with the term...with a violent kick an orange light on the dash comes on (looks like an exclamation mark over a gear thingy). As long as this light is on the auto gearbox will not change gears and it seems to always be in one of the top gears:yuck: What this means is that you cannot pull away without feeling as though you are stuck in quicksand.

This is happening to my dads 325i Auto. We have had to gearbox overhauled with no success. The light comes on intermittently.

We know that one of the coilpacks are faulty...can that be the cause of this?

Hi,
I have a volvo and it should also go into limp mode.
I replaced the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module),
which solved the problem.

Hopefully that would work.:bravo:

Our E46 318i Auto did this, turned out to be a faulty MAF & not the Gearbox
