Life on the other side...(for BMW dealers)

Always been a BMW fan and always will, specifically of the older generation cars, but sadly can't call myself truly loyal to the brand. Still got a few BMW models on my wish list of cars to own one day, should I be blessed with the opportunity. However, I'm willing to try alternatives - over the years I've owned VWs, Mercs, Honda's and Toyotas - the dominant brand being BMW though.

After several years of BMW ownership, you often take for granted the levels of service associated with BMW dealers. Recently I realised how others have moved on. Sometimes when owning certain premium German brands, the other brands gets labelled as lesser. I'm talking specifically about Lexus. Or rather my "glorified Toyota", that some people refer it to. Yes, it is a glorified Toyota. A product of badge engineering once you peel away at the surface. But that's where it ends.

There are a thousand comparisons on the net showing how each Lexus model compares to BMW's (for example). There are a thousand arguments on forums about 1/4 mile times... Sometimes Lexus is better, sometimes BMW is... however, the point of this thread is not to explain that, or justify my choice in brands. The point of this thread is to share my interaction on dealing with some local Lexus dealers compared to BMW and I'm going to be blatant about the outcome.

The service and ownership experience in dealing with Lexus dealers is so far ahead of dealing with (the multitude) of local BMW dealers I have dealt with over the past few years, that it is incomparable. Yes, you could argue that they sell so few cars that they can do this. However, is perceived individuality not a key driver in the premium brand segment. Would it be enough to persuade me away from buying a new BMW (should I ever buy a new car again) - hell, yes.

So what's the point of this thread. It's a wake up call to BMW dealers - you often promote your cars as being the best in segment. You could argue that you are right in some instances. But in a market segment that is evolving into much over muchness in terms of vehicle differentiation (i.e. a BMW does not significantly offer more than an equivalently priced Merc or Lexus), the BMW service experience is not remotely close to what a Lexus dealer can offer - that dear BMW dealer, in my opinion, is truly a premium experience. So go on Mr BMW service advisor or sales person - take it as a challenge on your next lunch break and borrow a Lexus to drive into a Lexus dealership and experience what a premium brand service experience truly means.

NB: Yes, I'm aware that this is a BMW forum :tiptoe:

You've been visiting the wrong BMW Dealerships :fencelook:

Customer service levels are never going to live up to everyone's expectations......

That being said, I'd never switch from BMW to Lexus nor VW for that matter.....

Agreed 100% - the BMW dealers in SA are lucky they are selling a desirable product - their service is downright pathetic in most instances.

Too many monkeys working at BMW dealerships.
Btw, VW is the same....

Glad to hear Lexus stands out!

Must agree.

BMW has turned away from customer service to a product based company in South Africa especially. Its disgusting how they treat the people that buy their cars thus paying their salaries

Thanks for post, totally agree.
They are very quick to give you "free" coffee, but I actually would like some decent service. I'm still loyal to brand and love the cars, but I would rather get a car out of motorplan so I don't have to deal with the dealers and fight to constantly to get your car properly repaired.
So many private guys/garages look after our cars way better than 99% of dealerships.

A very good post, and very true.

A lot of BMW dealerships don't care about customer service, and in my personal experience, neither does BMWSA. There is a few good dealerships, like Club motors fountains, but I am too afraid to know what I will have to go through, if my car had to have a problem too far away from Alwyn and his team.

think most of us will agree that the service from bmw dealerships in south africa is atrocious .. they are carried by their product, and they know it.

I have had a Lexus RX350 as my daily driver for almost a year. It was bought used and I can't say anything about dealer service because I haven't needed any. In that time, the following parts were needed:
  • parking light bulbs: one front, one rear (a bit unlucky here I guess)
  • wiper blades: two front, one rear (should have been picked up by the inspection process)
  • key remote battery: easily replaceable (not so on certain German marques)

BMW dealers are too comfortable because the cars sell by themselves. However, more and more car makers are creating some great cars that have BMW owners taking a second look.

The new Jaguars for example: three BMW owners I know of have bought a Jaguar in the past year.

Too many BMW owners I know have had some horror stories to tell about BMW service.

BMWs infamous service has been going on for too long! But, the cars sell by themselves and they get away with it!

I have to agree with MSM.

I dropped my car off at a dealer on Friday for a few small issues and i was promised that they will start work on my car on Tuesday only to find out they only started to work on the car yesterday afternoon.

Service is great but they need to brush up a little.

This I experienced badly

I for one is walking away from the brand. Busy doing research on what to buy still. Told myself latest September (increase month) I am out of the brand

Great post and would agree with the comments. As has been said, BMW vehicles sell themselves, the service is a huge problem however. I think the techies are just that - plug in, do what the machine says - replace (not investigate or solve) and then clock the job card. Its like they have a time limit per car in order to get through the daily intake.

The mechanics from the 80's/90's/early 2000's have gone and they have their own businesses now which I tend to support rather.

SO very true, VW is just a bad in terms if service.

I have to say though, since moving from BMW to VW I've come to realize that the VW might be a better product all together...

Although, I don't think much out there is more special than a older gen M car....

I think the OP's point is that a 'wrong BMW dealer' shouldn't exist

That is not the point, the point is, and you just have to check bmws's facebook page, is that in recent years BMW is dropping the ball on service delivery. And that is a fact

Point taken, with that being said there are still for a few excellent BMW dealers out there.
