My move from Japan to Germany...

Getting an F30 320i this week from another province. What's the process to change plates to my home province? I want personalised plates. The dealer guy and chic say I need to do it myself? How?

Call the relevant regional office and find out what the specific personalized plate options are, they vary in price, where you can pay 5k+ for your name (usually the less characters the more expensive) or less than R1000 for a 3 letter/ 3 number combination, using GP as an example.

Once you've checked availability you can buy the certificate stating that you own that specific sequence and you can transfer it from car to car, but they will preferably want you to already own the car it's being attached to, so you may have to provide details of a car you already own.

Once you have the certificate, it just gets handed in as part of the normal licencing procedure with an added instruction to 'allocate SPN'.

They charge in the region of R250 to allocate and they may charge you to an extra R200 odd to move the car from one province to another. And then numberplates will have to be printed as well.

You can only allocate a personalized number that you own to a car that you own, not on behalf of someone else.

So if the dealer is doing the registration, give them the certificate and tell them to bundle it with your registration. If you are doing it then let them walk you through the process at the counter.

Whatever you do don't fight with the clerk at the window, it's not worth the blood pressure.

Well, that is bad service!
Dealers usually have access to people who can fast track all registration admin, regardless of province.
When I bought a TT back in 2013, it was originally at an Eastern Cape dealer, but they did all the admin for me to get personalised GP plates (my first time getting such plates).
I would say twist the dealer's arm or at least get them to do the running around with their service provider and you just settle that bill.
