Looking at something from the E85 range.

Please share: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly about these cars with me.

I love my 320d, it's economical, drives like a dream - I don't really have any issue with it. On 203000km and still purring along nicely giving me 800-900km on a tank for urban driving.

I think I'm having a bit of an early midlife crisis (at 34 go figure) and in the mood for something else.

Coming from a fuel consumption dream and considering a 3.0L NA Petrol engine, gives me some chills intially :p but some more research has shown me they're not too bad - well that's on a google search.

I'd like to hear from owners/previous owners please.

Would be appreciated - cheers

:ty:

1. the Good - loads of fun
2. the bad - selfish car, you will be alone very often being happy
3. the Ugly - others will point and stare (and be jealous)

 Dont ask Zed owners if its a good car. Go try it out for yourself. and try wipe the smile off your face each time you get out.

What MikeR said

Look at the 2.5 SI as well, consumption is excellent and power is not far of the 3.0 SI variant, and should be on par with the 3.0 earlier engines.

Hehe, thanks for the replies. :)

I was thinking this morning that I'm pretty much at the point of having to go for some test drives to make a decision.

Cheers

Z4 30i, go do that thing.... I use to own a Z3 30i back in 07, nothing beats topless motoring!!!! not to mention the sweet music from a BMW 6 pot.

What ever you do, do not go for the 2l. You wont survive the ridicule!. 2.5 is still in danger zone. Either go 3l (si) or z4m. The m car can be a difficult daily drive and all parts cost three times what it does on the non M car. Also, if you go z4, go facelift. Prefacelift had plenty of niggles (including roof motors that are very prone to fail).

I ended up going for a z4 3.0si and I use it as my daily commute.

The good

Soooo much fun to drive!

The car's centre of gravity is really low. Can't believe the performance difference between z and 3x with same engine. It is also a last of a kind - manual, normally aspirated and soft top.

The z cars are also well specked out as standard. Satnav, CD shuttle (supports mp3), 10 speaker logic sound system, anti dazzle mirror, etc.

Most parts a shared with 3 series, so servicing and cost is in check post motor plan.

The bad

There will always be some retard proclaiming to the world that you have a hair dresser's car.

very low profile tyres + very little (almost no) suspension travel = dodging and diving to avoid potholes, road joints and even cracks in the road. As a result, it can be a challenging drive.

Other considerations

The boot is small, but significantly larger than most other convertibles. Feels x2 size of s2000 boot. Can get a set of clubs in there.

Fuel consumption will depend on your driving style. Open road the car can do better than 7l/100km but my average tank sits at about 13l/100km. I've had spirited weeks of driving where I only got 18l/100km -> +-250km on a tank.

The car is designed and configured to be fairly aggressive. They fall somewhere in between "normal" bmw's and M cars. So throttle response is quick, clutch is heavy, brakes are "flatter", steering is heavier, etc.

Z3 3.0lt would get my vote, m54b30 ftw!

Early Z4 3.0i had the M54B30 also, but some guys would rather go for the more powerful N52 option. Not me, E46 is where the love stops.

Me too, but then I remembered the Z4. The Z3 was a bit of a low point for BMW. Some say it was conceived to compete with the Mazda MX5.
