Is this one of those normal 320d sounds?

Hi,

So my e90 320d has started doing the whine thing when cold. When warm, the whine is still there but just less audible. The whine is constant under idle, increases pitch with higher revs, then lazily drops down when releasing the pedal.

The whine seems independent from the turbo whistle (which those of you with good ears will probably hear alongside the whine in the clip).

It was recorded with a phone so the volume is not apparent in the clip but to my ears, it is incredibly loud.

If it helps, when the air conditioner is switched on, there is an extra rumble from the engine bay that does not go away when the car is warmed up.

I will probably take it to the dealer but this is my primary means of transport and all of the dealers I've dealt with have had issues with supplying courtesy cars.

Can not really hear on that soundclip, and i do not even want to make a guess. Is there a possibility that you can get a better sound clip.

I found a youtube video of someone that has the same sound. Maybe that will help you until I can get a better recording. The video poster made the recording before and after a turbo replacement - I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.

When I bought my first diesel Bmw , 2009 E90 320d Lci, was going through exactly the same scenario, where the whine was more apparent on cold and once at normal operating temps it tends to tone down. Not too worry its normal :thumbs:

With it being my very first diesel and that stigma of turbo failure /swirflaps etc from previous versions made me have phobias lol, and thus became aware of every sound from that 4cylinder Diesel made. I took it to 2 dealerships , and they checked out all ok.
