Is it true?? M3 owners

Was watching a couplee of vids on youtube and saw one of a dct m3

When the guy started car, it was a cold start, and the redline dropped from 8k to like 4500 rpm. Does this happen all the time if the engine is cold or was it modded?

I'm guessing it increases as the engine temperature goes up?

Hey bud, I dont own an M3 but I do believe that once the oil pressure and engine temp are up to where they should be the red line raises back up

I know some cars do come out with this function I had a 2012 Renault Megane RS and it would also limit at 4500 rpm untill the engine was warmed up

Yes it's true when I has my e92 M3 it worked like that. Was a good thing. Teaches u how to look after ur engine etc. even now I still take it slow till the temp is up.

on the e46 m3 the rev limit definitely does not drop, the lights are just a warning/guide, not sure about the e9x, might be a M-DCT feature only

The first M car to do that was actually the E39 M5 - and ever since, all of them have the variable red line indication. You can still rev it past the indicators if you don't possess an ounce of mechanical sympathy, so it only serves as a guideline.

That being said, my M3 doesn't see more than 2500-3000 RPM until the oil temp passes 75 degrees - I guess I'm a bit pedantic that way.

its called idiot protection for the clowns that like to start the car and then bounce it of the rev limiter :nonono:

What it is, is inspiration to get software to override the limiter, so it can rev 9k while cold, because performance is at its best while everything is cold:tease:

Honestly - that feature is very optimistic.

When the oil temp gauge just lifts itself from 50deg, that indicator recons you can rev it up to 6k already. Madness.

I don't even take my cars over 2000 rpm until the water temp is slap bam in the middle and then still restrict myself to 3000 until the oil temp passed 75 deg.

Actually the red line moves to 6000rpm when started from cold. The limiter also kicks in at this rpm. As the oil temp moves up, so does the red line.

I second that . What you don't want, is for the limiter to hit 2.5/3k- cos then you're in limp mode and you need to cough up for actuators or something worse

Vvl and vtecs had the same feature when car is cold. But idiot protection is a much better name

Yes, this is true. I was confused initially when I saw the red line lower and higher on another occasion. I guess this is for the drivers who start their cars and race it .

its a great Idiot proof feature
