I don't see the problem with these cars, from what I have heard they are awesome to drive and good for the family.

Twinz on the forum own one so he will probably post some personal experiences.

Thanks, i had a look on carfind and autotrader, the X3 3.0d is very hard to find, so looks like 2.0d will have to do, just wondering if its going to give around 15km/l on the open road? and around 10 in town?

Get the transfer case checked out on any X3 before you buy. Some early models had failures at higher mileages which is a R30k repair. A rumble sound from the front like a bad wheel bearing is a sure sign of a failing transfer case.

Otherwise they are fantastic cars. My wife has been driving one since 2005.

on my one i have the glass roof and from what i have read if it is not used and the grease gets dry any full of dirt and then if it is used eventually the back glass lifts and does not retract ,then this is a 30k to 40k repair or it can be modded only operate the front section

These are excellent vehicles for our shitty roads. Go for an automatic. Transfer does not cost 30K more like 10K.

i have a man 6 speed but ,i also think auto would be better ,especially on a 20d from third gear its ok but you are always changing when around town the gears are short

Not if you're buying the real thing.

A rebuild might cost you R15-20k depending on who does it for you.

Friend bought one (2006 2l X3 diesel manual shift with 110k on the clock) two weeks ago and i went and fetched it in Mossel Bay. Was slightly dissapointed with the performance of the 2l diesel in the X3 body (i drive a 2003 non face lift 3l d X5 auto with the "old" diesel motor 390-410nm and am very happy with the performance).
Need to use the gears to really get going and you need about 2400 revs to really pass someone on the road. Below 2200 slightly sluggish to pick up speed.
This particular one is in excellent condition. Paintwork unbelievably clean and chip and scratch free. Tyres are very good and everything is working as it should. One thing that we discovered was that someone either reset the service sign or did not have it serviced at the agents as the next service said 13400 km and the service book was last stamped at 91k km. We had it serviced just to be on the safe side
Car drives well otherwise and the boot is quite big.
I would however again go for the 3l diesel X5 if i have to replace my car.

what sort of consumption are we looking at on X3 2.0d City & open road?
3.0d is awesome, but 11.4L/100km a bit heavy for me
