The Quickening is a phenomenon in the Highlander films and television series. Beheading a character known as an "Immortal" produces a powerful energy release from their body called a "Quickening."
If I had to imagine what this would feel like, I imagine its akin to stepping into an F10 M5. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and in the M5 this is more than ABSOLUTE.
So I had a chance to spend some time in my boets new M5.
Staggering, phenomenal, brilliant, superlative, incomparable- these are some of the adjectives I would use to describe this Juggernaut.
I approached this drive with more than a little trepidation- I mean could the F10 really compare to the E60 ? Everyone knows that I have proclaimed my old M6 as the greatest car I would ever own- so how could this new interloper match up?
Well all I have to say is "the king is dead, long live the king".
From the moment you slink into those seats, your ensconced in an all together different environment. It's pretty much a bog standard 5 Series MSport interior, yet it's the promise of what's to come when you hit the start button that leaves the rest bereft of significance.
Foot on the brake and I depress the start button and she fires into life. A slight burble but no real idle to speak of, just a thrum. It's as if she is gathering herself for the battle ahead. So we edge out of the drive way and a short distance to the gate. Nicely weighted steering feel at crawling speed, suspension wafting us along over speed bumps with little loss of composure.
As we turn onto the main road, my mind is a mix of anticipation and apprehension- what if she turns out to be soul less and devoid of character? What if my time in modded cars has blunted my appreciation for stock cars? As the road straightens I give her full throttle and she responds- not with power or thrust but with violence. I am flung into my seat, the seat belt tightening like a noose around me as we hurtle down the road.
I hook second and she is really moving now, one eye on the HUD and the other on the road ahead and she is galloping. 100kph passes like its nothing, we are pulling hard to 200 and still no let up, I keep it down till just shy of where the limiter should be and start letting off.
Dry mouth and sweaty palms, I look over at my brother and just smile.
God damn, she is a beast- silky smooth acceleration, even smoother gear shifts and loads of torque. I am gob smacked. I had a sense she would be good but not this good. Not so much better than the E60.
Every feature of this experience is intoxicating, not visceral like the V10, not athletic- just sledge hammer. She is potent everywhere. Where as in the old car you lived and died with the rev counter, here it's power is available instantly. Don't get me wrong she still revs to 7200 rpm and loves getting there but now she has no chinks in her armor. Just relentless, effortless, intoxicating power.
The ride is sublime, the steering feel is awesome with just the right amount of assistance. But I keep coming back to the power.
I have experienced some of the best machinery out there but this iteration of the M5 is for me the best car in the world right now.
On the return journey, I pluck up enough courage to switch off the TC. Holding my breadth, foot flat, launch control engaged---- waiting now, for the boost to build and then let off the brake---- bang we're off, she is trying here best to put the power down but we're wheel spinning deep into 3rd---- she finally hooks up and the inertia just flings you back into your seat and keeps you there. Pulled the paddle for 4th and there is no let off in power, pull fifth and still she is chasing the horizon. I tap off ---- and finally breadth again.
We return to the garage and I have the biggest grin on my face. What a car! What a machine! It's as if they distilled the essence of M division, concentrated it and injected it into this car. I am in love, she is everything I could dream of in a car and a suitable replacement in my dream garage for the V10 I used to hanker after.
What a car!
