Info on parts to fellow BMW owners

I hope that most BMW owners know this, but just to mention it again to help others. Friends please note that when you buy parts from BMW, you also pay for the BMW roundel on the package, sometimes a lot.

Just a small example of this: I bought lower control arm bushes for my E30 from BMW at R300.00 a piece, because at that time I thought BMW was the only place that stocked them, about a year later when I had to replace them on the other E30, I asked the spares shop if they had them, yes they did at R80.00 a piece! Example no. 2: fuel injector o-rings from BMW quoted me R30.00 a piece x 12 = R360.00, I got them from Bearing Man for R3.00 a piece! Wheel bearings same story: R1000.00 + at BMW, R400.00 from Autozone, same make SKF, the SKF one from BMW is just in a plain white box, while the other one is in a red and blue box with "SKF" and a picture of a bearing on it.

Not all the parts are made of the same material though. Oem is decent quality and will last another 100 000 km in most cases. Cheap stuff may not.

Goedkoop is duurkoop...

there is high quality after market stuff that outlasts OEM

Meyle is a good example of this they make bushing far better than OEM

then if you go one level above that Powerflex have a lifetime warranty... If you somehow break them they replace free of charge

on my own cars I always try replace with parts better than OEM :)

+1, as I said, more than once I found that the OEM part was exactly the same as the generic part, the SKF wheel bearing being a good example of this.

Just to mention one: Echlin has been producing quality electronic parts for most cars for many, many years.

Hi guys, just saw this thread now, and I've got a question on ChefDJ's comment. Why would a company use different materials for the same part? :fencelook:

I agree with this. Bosch covers many electrical components and supply BMW and Mercedes. Buy at the agents, pay for the packaging.

Thread revival... This might be a silly question to all the gurus on the forum but... Does anyone know who manufactures the E90 Oil Separator? I need to start comparing prices, but would prefer to get a high quality product instead of just going for the cheapest option. So any other good known brands are welcome.

Thanks in anticipation for the help.

I dont think Chef was reffering to different materials like steel and alumnium for the same part, but rather the quality of material. I believe the quality of aluminium in high quality custom rims and OEM are of a higher standard than some of the cheap reps that are floating around. The same applies to the quality of polyurethane, rubber, plastic used on some parts.

Hi there Bandile, check Goldwagen for a good replacement, maybe the other members can chime in for other suppliers of this part.
