Induction Kits

Hello All,

Firstly I'd like to say I'm new to this Forum, but thought it would be wise to sign up as all you experienced individuals out there would be great for tips, do's and do nots :)

I've owned my BMW E46 318i for little over a month and getting into the mix of things, I love tuned cars or there abouts so I'm looking to do things to my new pride and joy, I've already had a custom back box built for it which is done and on and next up I was thinking about induction kits for 1) the slight better performance due to airflow providing the ecu gets reset correctly, 2) for styling of the engine bay and 3) for the bit of a sound generated, I just want thoughts and opinions on anything in particular i should look to do with this.

Finally if anyone has done or has any ideas of other things that will help with performance, styling and sound with the engine bay etc that would be great and I look forward to hearing from you AWESOME BMW OWNERS :) Thanks for your time.

airflow... i highly doubt you will get any real Gain and you have to be careful to make sure you dont get engine heat into the intake

styling is subjective but you could improve there :)

sound... Yes

If you get a decent kit, take steps to avoid heat soak and don't expect massive gains then get one. Personally, I would just make sure I don't spend a fortune.

Hopefully some fellow fans can give advice on some decent options.

Thanks for the advice and this applies to everyone I just clicked reply on the bottom one :) Well I'm currently looking into get one custom made for mine for between £90-£150 so it's not too bad but will have to wait and see.

Google mighty car mods, induction kit test or something along those line. And have a look what they say. Chris Brand (IIRC) is also busy doing tests on which is better.

But from what I have read and seen so far OEM has the most power. Maybe look a the BMW performance intakes.

Or just supercharge it :roflol::roflol:

Hey Ryan,

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the 4 cylinders but this is what know.

OEM paper filter does not deliver on sound but it does on power.

Replacing the OEM paper filter with a flat panel 'performance' filter will increase the air flow, possibly also dust particles, but not deliver much more in performance or sound. I found that I can get up to 50km extra on a tank with the flat panel filter.

The CAI kit delivers on sound. So much that I am tempted every 30 sec to drop a gear to 3500RPM and floor it. Especially in town between the high buildings or on narrow roads. Unfortunately the CAI, even those branded as 'Cold Air' Induction kits do not provide optimal flow of cold Air to the intake. This causes a drop in performance. 'Butt dyno' says there is an increase in sound but a drop in performance.

The e46 has a tendency to drop power at 3500RPM. Don't ask me why but of all the dyno graphs ive seen, even tuned ones, like mine, suffer from this. Its as if the car takes a deep breath before throwing down all the power at 4000RPM to 7000RPM (6500RPM stock).

I love the sound of the inudction kit, thats why I fitted it back on my car last week as we have had cold weather and I thought I might as well enjoy the sound without worrying about heast soak. In summer I put the stock box back on.

And guess, what, your stock system is a proper 'Cold Air Induction kit'. It feeds direct cold air from the kidneys to your intake in a sealed system. Only difference is that the filter is paper and not cotton with oil.

Hopes this helps.

No seriously, welcome.

Being that side of the world, you should have plenty available options at much cheaper rates than what we have here. Post some pics of the car.
