Import engine

Good day fanatics,

I bought a import e46 330d (d1) engine 5 months ago.

According to the place which I bought it from, told me it was imported from the UK which I thought cool because it had only 88 000 killos on it. Fitted it into my car, had no problems with it, but it had poor performance :thumbdo:, don't get me wrong taking it on the long road it pulls nice but, not so nice as my original engine that was in the car especially when driving it local. The engine just feels sluggish and turbo kicks in but there's no torque until you floor it. Boost also comes in a bit too late and it doesn't boost so strong compare to the old engine. I recently replaced all 6 injectors by BMW Worcester because it was smoking like hell and shaking, with the thought that the problem with the performance could be solved from that. But I was wrong, still felt sluggish and same poor performance although the replacing of the injectors made a bit of a difference but not enough to top the previous engine that was inside the car. I phoned the technician to ask him if there is something different about the engines in South Africa compared to the UK. He told me that there is, and it has something to do with the MAF, the amount of air that enters the engines etc. He told me that he will still do some research about that and come back to me. And still waiting :eek:mgwaiting::eek:mgwaiting:

I want to know if here is any guys that also had the same problem, or knows about this issue.

I will appreciate the information, and if possible, could you give me a price roughly to fix this problem.

I'm no expert, but i think that's nonsense. Regardless of a different airflow, etc. the car should still have power.

My first guess would be that it's losing pressure somewhere...

Thanks for the reply, but where? According to them they inspected the car and there was no vacuum problems etc.

just a thought, would the actuator setting be any different in the Uk compared to SA?

Ok I see you are at the coast, and it really seems like actuator or boost leaks.

If the turbo is spooling, but there's no power then i think that probably means the leak is somewhere after the turbo in the system...

Maybe get an opinion from another Mech and see.

There are only a few pieces to check.
At intake manifold there is the intercooler pipe and EGR pipe that connects. Check if clipped on properly and tightened correctly.
In and out on intercooler. Out on turbo.

If all joints are connected properly check for physical damage. Perhaps a cracked intercooler.

Also difficult to track boost leaks if not under load.

You could also spray quick start along the intercooler pipes and see if it makes any difference. Normally increase of idle speed.

Vacuum lines. Check those.

Lastly is your vacuum pump working.

Thanks for this. I used the quick start method already, and there was no problem. I saw that i have a leak at the bottom of my intercooler, its like a oily build up, which attracts sand, mostly on the left side corner. I had an EGR delete.

Hi, a piece of advise. When i bought my 2005 X3 2l d a year ago it was in a terrible state motorwise. When i drove it home after purchase it jerked and felt like it had flat spots. I immediately removed the swirl flaps and disconnected the egr, also removed the oil seperator and the cat. (Also cleaned the air flow meter and the sensor in the boost pipe leading to the egr.) On my first test run the car ran smoothly but did not have much power. Fortunately the first thing that caught my eye when i opened the bonnet was that the big screw clamp egr pipe connection to the egr was not tight.(This is the clamp that fixes the stainless steel pipe to the side of the egr). Tightened that and car was running smooth and pulled nicely for a 2l. I would check that connection seeing that you did work on the egr and also, it is easy to get at as it sits right on top of the manifold right in front of you. Also been replacing the turbo boost pipes seals as i found on my E60 530d that it was leaking quite badly where the boost pipe joins the turbo. The seal was fitted incorrectly by either the guys that worked on the car previously or i shudder to think, BMW themselves. Hope this helps in finding your problem!
