Idle after battery replacement

My battery on my E36 had packed up about a month ago now. I replaced with a new one and since then it seems that my cars idling has dropped. Now I can't really remember what exactly the car used to idle I think +- 800 to 900 rpm and since replacement +- 600 to 700 rpm.
What could be the cause ?
Car doesn't cut out at all

the only "logical" explanation I have is that previously with the "DUD" battery, your alternator was under severe load trying to constantly keep the battery charged and supplying the demands of the electrical system.

that will cause extra load via the alternator belt on the engine, and to compensate the engine management would have supplied extra fuel to keep the engine RPM up to account for the extra "drag" that the overworked alternator was placing on the system.

Now with a new battery, the alternator has a much easier job keeping the voltage supply at its peak, meaning less load and thus less "drag" from the alternator on the engine, and hence an easier free idle.

I think you will notice the same effect when you switch the aircon "on", whilst idling, the drag from the aircon pump on the engine causes it to step up its idling speed to compensate for the increased load, turn the aircon "off" and the idle drops due to it being freed from the load of the aircon compressor.

Only thing I can think of is the higher idle was to maintain a charge in a dying battery, newer battery holds charge better hence it keeps the revs lower...

Plausible explanation?

Thanks for the replies guys it does make sense, when I get a chance I will post a pic, Ralf should I try the aircon and see if idling goes up ?

I might need to retract that portion of my post, sitting on the couch, I am having second thoughts at the moment, but will check tomorrow what happens on my E39

Oh ok but the beginning explanation applies ?

I checked out the idle Air-con off and then Air-con on, on my 530d...and it didn't show any difference, but I seem to recal that on the E38 there is a 100-200 RPM gain when the air-con is activated
