How to get a part number for my starter?

Apparently it's some French brand, not a Bosch. Any help on how to get the part number.

e46 320d 2005

Miscellaneous:

Thought it was my alternator going, but after having it properly checked, the starter or solenoid is the focal point.

I believe there are no spares around for these starters. So may go with eBay.
Or have it stripped to see if it can be repaired.

with a 2004 model, you probably not worried about effects on motorplan anymore, in this case take the car to any reasonably good auto electrician work shop, and they will easily remove it, test it, and either replace it with the correct aftermarket unit, or repair/re-condition your current starter motor.

what are the symptoms that lead you to believe it is the starter motor's fault ?

If it's not Bosch then you probably have a Valeo starter. The smaller models use these where the 6 cylinders use the Bosch units.

The part number is likely to be: 12417787356

You should be able to get a new starter from Goldwagen for around R1500.
