How much maintenance is needed on a car that is just out of motor plan

Hi guys,

I am interested in a 2016 318i 94500km that runs out of motor plan in July 2021.

I want to know, generally speaking, how much is spent on maintenance/service/repairs when a car is out of motor plan.

I am not talking about the rare cases where something major happens (Although it would be good to get an idea of this too), but more just the general expenses that come up after the motor plan runs out.

Thanks!

Go in to your local dealer with the vin and ask them to quote you on a major service including all filters, brakes and belt/chain + tensioner.

And then ask for an idea of what is required at each service interval (some cars have books that outline this, the car you want may not have its books).

Compare that with what independent workshops will charge and it will give you an idea of what to expect relative to your yearly mileage.

Compare those to what an aftermarket service and maintenance plan would, cost relative to how it would benefit you.

Some of the smaller jobs COULD be DIY, but it depends on your willingness/ability.

I noticed all of your treads being related to various models.

I think it would be best to create a single thread, post your intended budget, and what sort of driving you will do (ie. long distance, local runs etc) and then mention your preferences such as sedan/coupe or petrol/diesel etc.

Based on the above, the comments received will be far more beneficial to you

Right of the bat, a 2016 318i engine uses a 1.5l 3 cylinder engine...these arent very popular and i dont think there is much information on them (ito known issues )

Secondly, a 2012/13 320i uses bmws notorious N20 engine...plenty of information on the internet, most notable issue being timing chain failure.

Lastly, 320d ...these are generally solid options, minor issues which are well documented.

Good Luck :hammerhead:

I would stay away from the 318i. Consider a 320d and hopefully you wont have to worry about much maintenance and have peace of mind.

Don't mean to sound like an echo, but better to stay away from the 316/318/320i and get a 320d, even if it means a slightly older model with higher mileage than their petrol counterparts. Just ensure it has been maintained well.

Also, don't think that just because a car just came out of motorplan that it is well maintained. Its a known fact that BMW will look for any excuse not to change stuff under motorplan and crazy stuff like do oil services only every 25000km and plugs every 60000km etc I would take a well maintained car with proper service history and a file full of invoices and receipts then a car that has only 2 or 3 oil services over 100000km and 5yrs

Sorry to post here but battling to post a new subject.

We have an X3 that just went out of 1 year extended motorplan on 31 December. Price from BM was too high and our covid mileage was too low for this year.

Contacted BM for a warranty only but after 3 calls and 2 mails we did not get response. Spoke to an indi who does our other BM cars and he could not refer an aftermarket firm quickly.

Car has 80k on the clock and will do about 10k next 2 years. Just serviced by BM.

Any references? Appreciated.

Hi There

My 2015 F30 320i came off plan in August 2020, the cost to renew the plan for just 1 year (time only, as it only had +-80k km) was around R24k which I found to be too high.

I opted for a 2 year warranty for R14k, I did it through BMW Supertech. This could be an option for you.

Honestly if you feel that the car is going to break with that little millage sell it. It's a known source and if it's been reliable then it will continue to be so after. Use a indy and the 15k a decent warranty would cost you can put aside for any potential bills.
