Hello!
Got a BMW coming up to the end of the BMW Select finance term. Options are to buy car, return, upgrade, etc. I will be returning. General rule of thumb is that fair wear and tear is ok, but not serious damage. One of my mags is damaged (kerb strike) - definitely cosmetic and doesn't affect the driving. Any ideas if they will fuss about it? Picture below - the damage is near the M badge.

That us damage and not wear and tear, you will have to fix this one. It should not be pricey to fix it either.

Good diamond cutting and refurbishment is never cheap in my opinion but if will be a lot cheaper and cost effective if the OP gets it done by himself rather than relying on what BMW charge him for that damage.

100% - The Wheel Collision guys who do my rim work are well priced and do great work. Definitely private fix be done before taking the car back...BMW will charge massive for this to be done in comparison

As have been said... fix it yourself before... BMW will be fussy and charge you and arm and leg.

On a side note, in the next 12-24 months there should be a flood of these “select” financed cars back on the used market as they were all the rage 4-5+ years back. Always thought they might be bargains to be had as dealers try to flog the stock so let’s see…

My X3 was one of these.
The previous owner had it from 2018-2022.
I picked it up with 38,000km at a good price.
A year later I found out that BMW Sandton didn't disclose that the car had front end accident damage - nothing appeared on the Plan Comments. Apparently, the previous owner fixed it privately and it didn't flag on the BMW system. This also goes to show that BMW doesn't properly inspect their Select Used stock (apart from glaring issues), so buyer beware.

That is a quick fix, I use reliable mag repairs on the previous X3 they collect and sometimes give you a run around mag and tyre

I would guess a similar line of logic to above would have been applied by the original owner: Get it fixed off grid at all costs in order to avoid the penalties (Just scaled up from a rim to front accident damage) and then the dealer doesn't pay much of any attention to it when it is returned as he is eager to rent the next car out to them. As far as I can tell, there is also no consequence for the previous owner if they do this.

Can definitely agree that there is minimal vetting on select stock and even during motorplan inspections unless it is an M car (and even then still minimal vetting on accidents). I have seen cars at Fourways and Midrand that have obvious repairs (and even still 'smell' like a panel shop inside - IYKYK)

I still don't think the 'no accident history' or 'no comments' thing is any good as it stigmatises cars that have otherwise good repairs or minimal (but expensive) damage repaired while at the same time 'rubber stamping' cars like the above that are hiding repairs of unknown quality. Seen many of these threads and comments now about how "OMG it has a R300K comment" but it doesn't have any context to go with it - the value in isolation doesn't tell you anything in these days of R100K headlights and R50K electronic modules or R50K cooling system components. The fact that BMW and others don't disclose anything other than the value is also a problem as you then have to track down details yourself.

I know of a BMW dealer that repairs their stock at a non-ARC so that the vehicles don't have comments 🫠

Thanks everyone! Pretty unanimous feedback :D Now, referrals for who can fix near Centurion/Midrand (GP) and what it will typically cost and how long it takes? I did some research and it seems it needs a diamond cut or something like that? Doesn't that noticeably change the look?

Yip, they diamond cut and spray a clear coat over that if I'm not mistaken (factory finish)

A buddy of mine has a Rim and tyre business from home and specialises in BMW. He's based in Erasmia, so not too far from you.

Here are his details: 078 019 4380 (MMK's Tyre Shop / Muaawiyah)

These guys quoted me R 750 for a touch up and R 1800 for a diamond cut - I am not sure what the differences are and if a touch up would be sufficient

Touch up would usually mean they "Polish" the Rim which looks absolutely horrible in my opinion, very noticeable even though they say it's not.

R1800 is a bit on the expensive side as I know a few guys who do Full sets for 5k and single wheels at R1500
