Best I've personally seen is a 95 525i with 355000km. And the overall best (non-BMW) was a Isuzu 250 with 856000km without the engine ever been opened. The Isuzu did have a year or two where the speedo was broken too...

best I have seen is an E36 328 (was my dads partner's car, they called it scruffy). had 630 odd on the clock without major work to the motor.

I keep saying, you keep a BMW engine in good oil, and cool, they can and will go forever, same gent with the E36 owns a E46 330 as well in manual, 350 or something on it, I wont say its trouble free, but it has served him well, and he recons he will drive it for another 100 before he will consider selling it.

Same gent also owns a vert E46 330, but that only has like 40,000 on it, that one is baby'd all its life...

I have seen a couple of those old small 1200 toyota bakkies (the ones even smaller than the nissan 1400) that had over 1M km on it and still going strong. The bodywork on all of these were barely still there because of all the rust and abuse, but the engine could just not die.

Looks like the E36 was the height of BMW's good build quality :dunno: BMW also offered MP that could be renewed up to 200K KM or 9 years on those cars - not sure of other models, but IIRC it was capped to 7 only when the E46 came out. My ex E36 M3 only came off MP after 9 years (mileage was just under 100K KM at the time).

Our shortterm insurance broker drove a 1995 E36 318i. After 5 years he sold it on 350 000km. A few years later the e36 was still running and sitting on 502k km. Thats last we had an update on the car.

At that time, she asked for a timing chain, and I think, a clutch.

Yes, was the high time for Audi as well. The S2 and RS2 models had a standard 100k km motorplan, no year limit. I have heard of one that went for its last motorplan service just the other day...
