High fuel consumption after fitting new battery

Hi Guys,

Since buying the car in 2012, I have never had to replace the battery. I've had to jump start it a few times, but the car never lost complete electrical power.

The car has always had a fuel consumption of between 9.2. and 9.9 depending on how hard I drive it.

In December, I fitted a brand new battery from BMW. I replaced it myself and the car was without any battery power for several minutes while I was swapping out the battery.

Now the car has consistently been between fuel consumption 11.2 and 11.9. I thought it may take a few hundred Km's for the computer to get an average reading, but it's been 2 months and I'm starting to think that I've reset some setting or mapping that is causing my consumption to be higher???

Does anyone have any ideas or what steps I can take to investigate this further?

Thanks in advance.

Is this in the same conditions as before, same road conditions, same traffic, same highway or city driving?

And what car are we referring to here if I may ask?

I think its paranoia.

Reset OBC settings and go for a long drive on a highway and report back.

This may be a stab in the dark, but it could very well be that your old average of 9.7 was over many thousands of KM, whilst your new average is over a shorter distance. It should eventually come down and equalize.

Same happened with my M3. I was used to having an average of 10.5-11 over a couple thousand km. Changed the battery and now with only doing a few hundred km I sit at 12.5-13. With highway driving that number starts dropping slowly. It should eventually even out at high tens again. My 2 cents.

Hi Guys,

Thanks you for your quick responses, much appreciated:

Lizzard: This is the exact same conditions (highway driving to work and back), same route etc.
Car is 2004, Z4, 3.0, Automatic (not smg), 60 000km on the clock

ChefDJ: I have reset the OBC (I select the consumption setting and click "recalculate") and have driven a short distance ie: 50km at a time before switching off the ignition and same. It's been about 300km - 400km since I did this. I will report back after more km's.

Is there another "reset" function for for the OBC, other than the "recalculate" function?

Crash_Nemesis: Thanks for your input, I also hope it evens out/equalises.
