Hi Everyone

So my car - 2010 320d M-Sport A/T Dynamic Edition - 64k kms - is going out of maintenance plan at the end of September this year.

I absolutely love my car, but the accountant in me always looks at things on paper.

The car is loosing value (4.5 years old at the end of March) and will only be paid-off after another 2 years when the maintenance plan expires.

I bought the car two years ago with 24k kms on the clock.

So I have the option of extending the maintenance plan. The local stealership said it will be about R10k to extend if one buys a year and closer to R20k in another year for more Kms.

So taking this into account and smoothing the cashflows - the option to upgrade is there - it makes financial sense. I am in the fortunate position where I owe less on the Car that the trade - So I can easily get out of it.

So basically looking at a 2012 / 2013 320d's or 328i's - budget of R350k.

I'm all ready nostalgic with the idea of selling.

My car has a PnP and absolutely eats up the road and the occasional GTI when I catch them off-guard :cartel:

I've read and heard so many great things about the F30 with the new 8-Speed box. Even a properly spec'd Luxury Line looks great to me. I will buy an M-Sport again.

Now where I need help - would you upgrade? :YesNo:

The F30 will cost a little more per month. ( I've Factored in Tyres for my car and the Maintenance Extensions in the cost) - I haven't done any research with regards to other Non-BMW Warranty Extensions. I believe nothing beats the BMW Maintenance plan and would prefer to keep it running for as long as possible.

P.S. - If I would upgrade - Probably an 328i M-Sport 8 -Speed Auto with and M-Performance Exhaust.

If you get a good trade now AND find a car you happy with go for it.

OR

Wait it out another 2 years, car is paid off, the value will be lower, but all of that is your deposit. The trick is predicting the future value? maintanance wise, you better off paying for your services. It's probably gonna be 1 service still on plan, and 1 or max 2 services from your pocket. Worst case R4k a service average. Brakes may cost more, have them done under motorplan if possible. I don't think you will need a warranty if you plan to keep the kilos under 100k.

If BMW does find the car I want - the car will be listed on the forum for a fanatic to buy at the price BMW offers me.

Not looking to get more. Would far rather appreciate it going to another Fanatic.

I was in the same position last week. I chose to keep my car and upgrade plan. Thinking of a small runabout for Monday to Friday runs. At the end of the day I am looking forward to a freehold 335i in time to come. When the small car gets older, I'll trade that in for an M or whatever may come along. Until then, I'll see how this decision unfolds!

You speak of depreciation but surely a newer car will depreciate more quickly? If you're happy with the current car, I'd say keep it - you don't seem to do too much driving judging by your mileage. If you really want an upgrade, then it's a different story ;)

True story - a newer car will depreciate more - but again - I will finance the deal where I should always be able to get out of the car without taking a knock. My argument is to with regards to value of the "asset" one drives compared to the cost of ownership / cashflow.

It's the same argument I had when I was considering buying a new Cross Polo or the BMW with 24k kms on the clock - no brainer to me - then.

Also - I've been shopping around a little online and a decent 2013 320d A/T M-sport with about 35k kms is going for R350k - New they are retailing at R520k - R530k (Specs and Discount dependent). Brutal depreciation... but more of a bargain then for others.

Will be interesting to see what the Facelift does to the resale value.

I've also decided to stick with Diesel. Will be doing more out of town travelling - plus the fuel bill saving makes it possible to tour a little further for the golf tours.

Now the ball is in BMW's court. They need to find me a Car first.

I've seen some 330d's online... I just close my eyes and look away.:YesNo:

I've also toyed with option of keeping my car - try to :skit:be creative with the financing - and get a weekend road warrior of some sort (Z4 M-Coupe) - Would need to sell it to Head-office first though...Sigh

Quick question - Doesn't everyone always want to upgrade?

Your monthly premiums once the car is paid off will cost less than maintenance but I see where you're coming from :).

I love upgrading so I understand that too. Good luck with finding a car and I hope you get what you want and it treats you well!!

I say upgrade ....
I come from an E90 320i , i used the car well close to 200k kms . And it got to the point where i couldnt dish out cash for stupid things failing regularly even with an extended warranty

So i leaped and bought an F30 Msport 320i .

I love it . Its soft , smooth and definitely the looker ..
The build quality on the interior is not the same , dont expect it to be the same as an e90 .
Its retro and lighter . And if you a fan of that then its just for you ..

Oh and add a 20" wheel and its a beast on the road .
