which one has e46 :RedNo:

GTR 2 does... ALso a great game.

I think with the right mods they could all have it.
Remember there was a very nice mod for Rfactor, loved the little E36 they had in there, practised Kyalami on it ahead of a real track day :)

I expected there to me a wider range of cars in the PC sims seems consoles are better for racing games but this will mean getting a new console for me...

Bold statement that, this may just spark off the 'ol PC vs console debate ;)
I think it depends on what you want really, in my eyes Forza and GT are both arcade games, and if that style, along with a large selection of cars is what you are after then it an obvious choice.
Personally my console gets used for what it's good for - Mortal Kombat!
It's just an opinion of course and there is a lot more to debate, but I'm not going there.

Maybe the only other thing worth a mention which often gets overlooked is online multiplayer, and the player community associated with each platform. Something with mass appeal will tend to have a player community representative of that, same goes for a more specialised simulator type application.

well I grew up on GT currently have GT4 but hardly play anymore... even GT4 is 'close' to real i would expect the later ones to be better

If the PC games do have much better physics engines and customization options then I see the point :)

ideally I would want a game with a good physics engine and access to an e46 I can mod realistically to be similar to my real car this is what I am after

I do realize there is a vast difference between real life and digital but If i can fiddle with settings digitally then test them real world it should be much cheaper and quicker

GT 5 and 6 both have e46. You can mod them pretty realisticly. Forza 5 has e46 and it looks awesome. Both games are pretty good sims and the best you're going to get on Console, but the PC games take it to another level.

Here is an example of Rfactor 2's tire physics

[video=youtube]

here is an example of what happens if you don't look after your tires. Degredation, flat spots, blistering and handling goes out the window.

It's not just about being quick any more, it's about looking after your tires whilst still being quick.

100% throw in a mandatory pit stop and a choice of tyres into an online race and things get very interesting very quickly.

I am not a big fan of the entire NFS franchise anymore but the SHIFT 2 Unleashed was quite good, it has the E36 ///M in there aswell. Quite fun

Also have a look at the VLN 2005 Mod for Rfactor. Quite a few older Beemers in there. Sadly my Rfactor doesn't want to take a screen shot..

Race 07 is also a good game, very close to SIM.

Moranor I just have to say bud if you think any of the GT series games are close to real then you honestly bud really need to sit behind a decent force feedback wheel on the PC and give one of these sims I have mentioned a go. You will be blown away at the difference in realism.

I myself used to be a huge GT fan boy but after racing online in these sims I cant even touch GT without being like "wtf is this kak".

Honest bud :D

but what to buy?

I dont have much time for gaming it has been this way for years now (lol still running a PS2 says it all) I want a good sim purely to experiment with settings for my e46 then go out and test real world

I have a GT Driving force wheel and would like to get some proper use of it :)

PC is the only way for you to do what you need to.

The newer sims also demand quite a powerful system too.
Which translates to an empty wallet

Aaaah Nick has a GT driving force wheel...

If thats what you want to do then I would recommend you looking at rFactor or rFactor 2. Both these games are modded and there is almost def an e46 mod.

If you want to experience a sim for just sim pleasure and not worry about the e46 then Assetto Corsa is great and getting better leading up to release day.

I dont believe there is anythibg "sim" like available for consoles. With project cars being the closest coming March 2015 and even then that is filling the gap between sim and arcade.

already had a look and my laptop will be able to have a decent Frame rate for Rfactor 2 in low res settings IF I get proper use I will look at upgrading my PC to run it better :)

does Rfactor 2 allow for wheel/tire size changes?

Was just about to ask what your PC spec is..

Reason is that Asseto requires a semi-decent PC to run on, and if you can't get sufficient frame rate to get a smooth experience you will end up frustrating yourself, which I would steer way clear of.

There is a nice channel on YouTube called Empty Box, have a look at the Sim Racing 101 series of clips, the guy explains quite nicely about the various games.

The other thing is that these older games aren't really expensive, so your choice doesn't have to be final. The stuff is dirt cheap on Steam. Also Steam will be having their annual Black Friday game sale which I believe starts this Wednesday, so you are bound to pick up some games at next to nothing.

Haha GT looks so cheap compared... and thats before you feel the physics difference.

EmptyBox's videos are very very valuable and the most unbiased opinions on youtube when it comes to sim racing. Def worth a look!
